  1. I've a minature labradoodle... A great family dog, good size, not to big but can run and run. I call her a labrador poodle cross..
  2. What he's going to pay you £130 quid to take it away..?
  3. Don't be so negative - The aim of this 2 year course is to produce competent arboriculturists who will be equipped with the knowledge and practical skills required to take up posts in the industry in such areas as grounds personnel with commercial contractors or local authorities, tree climbers or assistant tree or woodland officers. + in two years the economy will be picking up again. If your young and have the time to muck about a college, do it. College/uni isn't all about learning. It's about growing up if you learn something usefull on the way that's a bonus. How often do I find my 2nd year palentology lectures usefull? (I'm quite good with dinosaur names with my kids..I suppose:001_smile:). But some of the biochemistry, genetics, stats... Most of the stuff I've been taught over the years has little practical use but I still recommend going to college to anyone.
  4. You can do more then just stand around in it.. Goretex does command a high price. But I have yet to find anything as breathable and hardwearing. Any one into mountineering or outdoor pursuits wouldn't think twice about spending that sort of money on a jacket. Why would you not want the best kit for something you do everyday..? There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. I own at least 6 different gortex shells which I've picked up over the years. Previous to my fristards I had a North Face gortex jacket which is now over ten years old that I'd used for many years before using it for climbing in. It is still waterproof and in good condition, I only changed it as I wanted Hi Viz.. I don't like being wet and cold.
  5. Fristards GORE-TEX® Jacket GXB-484. Only £196.40+VAT... worth every penny! http://www.workweartrading.co.uk/prodselect.asp?pg=403
  6. Ewan, at 2 1/2. Getting to grips with the ropes.. He can spot a Yew tree. Hazel is only 15 months and can't ID a hazel yet. The eldest Orrin needed a tree so he's become Orrin Oaks...
  7. I've given up with the clear visor, scratched and smudged, unuseable after a couple of weeks. Still a good hat.
  8. You will learn stuff on the PTI, and the way they like reports to be layed out makes sense. It is worth doing if you have the relevant experience, but I think there is a place in the market to be taught tree inspection, the PTI course does not set out to do this. The fungi ident bit, is IMO difficult. Dried up upside down crusty fungi you've not come across in the real world are almost impossible to ID from the pictures in books. If you get the fungi wrong you also lose all the marks for the type of decay, hosts etc. In the real world if you found a fungi you couldn't identify you could get help (arbtalk) or act as the worst case so I'm not sure the weighting of fungi ident is realistic..
  9. I am checking ebay, but if you see someone selling a number of saws which correspond to a load that have been nicked why can't we not have a link saying saws for sale....? There is loads of stuff on ebay much of it stolen and I don't have time to search it all, if someone sees something they feel might have been nicked from a member it would be good to let them know, so they can check it out. Also an email to the seller requesting serial numbers might scare some of the crooks of using ebay...?
  10. Stick with NZ, visit Aus, but go stay in NZ.
  11. Not when compared to depreciation of new cars and nearly new cars.
  12. I reckon people get way to interested in MPG's. If you do a high milage it will make a difference but for 10,000 miles a year or less its peanuts compared to depreciation etc.. I worked out I was going to save a few 100 quid a year when changing from my 1.8 diesel berlingo (45mpg) to my 2l petrol (30mpg) honda FR-V. Assuming 10,000 miles a year, petrol at 90p a litre: A car doing 30 MPG's would cost £1,363 A car doing 45 MPG's would cost £909 Only £450 a year.. When you go using more expensive diesel it's even less. Then you add in the extra servicing most diesels need and the additional cost. I got the figures from this site: http://www.torquecars.com/tools/uk-mpg-calculator.php
  13. You could leave the stump as the young growth is.. different.. Some folk like it. just make sure it gets cut every few years.
  14. You can get cycle helmets that go really small.
  15. I got a 441W last year, as my fingers were giving me grief, just got another. Go with the W/heated handles. We've also the 660W. I've not had any probles since. I used shrek's 084 last week, I didn't have much choice as it was one of the two saws that wasn't nicked, but that can shake........
  16. My boys 3 and 5 love climbing the small apple trees and magnolia in my garden. They each have a chainsaw to use (a top handled btb) and a stihl for the groundie. they're not doing the trees much good... I guess I'm teaching them bad habits because they always free climb and I've seen them using the saw in the tree wihout a rope and harness and one handed!
  17. Looks like we might just get a full sized container as you can pick them up for £800. We could get the chippers in then too. Bolt it to the floor and have a laminated steel box, a GSM alarm, cctv, one of those alarms that are so loud you can't go near and trip wires setting off blank rounds! And a flock of geese.. Have I missed anything?
  18. I don't think it's meant to be a "training" it is an overview of stuff you should know and an exam which you need to 75% (I think) to pass. I think it is split: 20% of the marks from 4 fungi 40% from some short answer questions and 40% from two tree inspections, with an automatic fail if you miss something obvious. Like I said before it is not a training course. You will learn something but don't expect to be taught how to inspect trees. If you do that already do a bit of reading, study the fungi threads and go for it.
  19. I love mine.. seach for previous helmet posts..
  20. Putting the chipper as a trailer was to save you money. We had the chipper with NFU as a seperate item but the rep worked out if it was insured as a trailer with the vehicle insurance it was cheaper.
  21. I thought are tool box on the truck was pretty bomb proof..... till last week. Can any on one recomend a decent store for 10 or 12 saws and several hedgecutters? I've found these: http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/site-store/path/safes-site-van-storage and thinking about locking it in one of these: http://www.mrbox.co.uk/gallery39-chemical-store-6ft.html Do ya think the bstards would get through then both
  22. The following are the numbers from my stolen saws: Would it be possible for someone to come up with a spread sheet which us unfortunates could add to with our numbers so that any one buying a second hand saw can check it ain't be nicked? Could it be added as a sticky at the top of stolen equipment?
