  1. I have borrowed a Laserace hypsometer for a course tomorrow - alas I can't work out how to just calculate the tree height! It's got too many functions!! I don't have my laser disto and clinometer now so am relying on this newfangled kit. Can anyone shed any light?
  2. Could be a bleeding canker? Photos would be good!
  3. Great job and video Matt!
  4. Anybody else on this course at Stoneleigh this week? It's always nice to meet a fellow arbtalker at these events:001_smile:
  5. Different pruning specs for different trees! I wouldn't specify a crown thin on a leggy ash in an urban environment - a crown reduction is ideal there to reduce wind sail and loading on long limbs. Personally I would only specify a thin if a tree's crown was oddly congested or full of vigorous re-growth from previous pruning. And I would normally suggest a thin due to light issues rather than to lessen wind-sail. I think crown thins can often be misunderstood as removing 'excess growth' - as if the tree grew all these branches by accident because is has made a mistake!
  6. Nice mr target! Looks like the 'dowson' method of conifer ident?!
  7. Out of interest, for soil aeration and remediation do people prefer an air-spade over a terravent?
  8. Ha ha! Bloody good point there. It must indeed have been a sunset!
  9. Goa. Feb 2007 Edit: oops, this is actually sun rise. Am i disqualified?
  10. PM sent.
  11. I would try and price per tree if you can.
  12. Agreed - looks really good. I quite fancy a winter break in one of those, I bet they are nice and toasty when the burners stoked up!
  13. Midland Forestry are advertising at the moment. Go to the advertising section of the AA site for details. (http://www.trees.org.uk)
  14. Use of blowers and hedgetrimmers with regard to HAVS is an area that I see most people flouting 'the guidelines'. I don't have the stats and figures to hand but I think long armed trimmers shouldn't be used for more than 15 mins at a time or something!
  15. Cool - nowt wrong with throwing in a curve ball to the discussion!
  16. Fair enough - sorry, I didn't mean to patronise. I would have thought it unlikely that the ground would further dessicate after the tree removal though?
  17. Other way round dude - the soil is more likely to swell/expand after the felling due to all the soil water no longer being removed by the tree.
  18. Do they pre-date the houses?
  19. Where works are likely to affect neighbours, the LPA are advised to notify neghbours. Exactly for the reason you have described! Shame you took the flak for it. I expect the arb officer got an ear bashing on the phone!
  20. Congratulations by the way. Onwards and upwards my friend. Remember me when you are filthy rich.
  21. Can't you get Terry McGovern to assess you for a load of tickets in one go? Or do you want the actual training again too?
  22. Good stuff Matt! Looks like a smooth operation in some nice weather.
  23. Great pics there Bart. Here is some and a neighbouring old Ganoderma bracket on an old Hornbeam I saw last week. It also had a lot of areas of exudate higher up the stem.
  24. Bundle 2: I agree, the timing is very frustrating indeed! Interesting points arb culture - I had not heard that criticism of the PD syllabus before. Good to know the BSc also holds some kudos.
  25. Hi chaps and chappesses, I am interested to know if people have experience with either of the above courses - particularly if you did them part-time or by distance learning. I want to add to my qualifications this year, but as the PD Arb is no longer running I am looking at the more academic route. My concern is that a degree is equivalent in to the PD, they are quite different courses. I understand that the PD was the best for practitioners as it was quite hands on whereas the degree route is more theoretical. Do people agree with that? And how good is the material used for distance learning from Uni's? In the past I have always thrived on the discussion and seminars etc so am wondering if lone study at home will be stimulating enough! cheers, Paul
