Skyhuck has already answered but I would add that the best way to accurately measure the DBH is with a DBH tape - a normal tape will give you the circumference but if you put a DBH tape around a stem it will tell you the average diameter.

Ah, thanks Tony. The FC are really getting stuck in to 'our territory' aren't they!! So perhaps that's the answer - 'tree surgeons' stay in arboriculture and those that want to influence future tree management jump over on to the forestry wagon as urban foresters.... I get the distinct feeling I am shooting my mouth of having read very little about 'urban forestry' as yet so I fully expect these comments to be shot down in flames....

This conversation exactly highlights the split in our industry: those that are pro trees to enhance our landscape and society and those that will do any tree work for money regardless of the consequence. Perhaps there really is a big difference between being a 'tree surgeon' and an 'arboriculturalist'? How is arboriculture to be taken seriously at a policy level when our industry exists with such a split? Maybe we should divide and re-brand as 2 seperate entities: tree conservationists and tree maintenance contractors....

How much do you charge to cut down a tree?

I have seen lots of those in Africa. As far as I am aware they do not migrate here which is probably why it caused a stir.

But what's to stop a LA writing their own procedure/policy to do what they feel is best to enhance 'best practise'? Frustrating as it is, they are the ones in the position of power here. Either way, it's a pretty poor document!

Just read the Trees in Towns 2 article last night (I wasn't at last years conference). I thought it was an excellent article - very scathing of the AA in its conclusion! I also agreed with the section about the 'split personality' of our industry and how this damages our profession. There is a split between the "tree lovers" and the "petrolheads". It's something I have always been aware of, and to a degree I have straddled both parties, but Mark makes the point that arboriculture will not carry the same weight as other professions such as landscape architects/ecologists/town planners while this split personality exists.

Ditto. As a "believer" that is happy to share my beliefs when asked, I have always found internet forum threads about this subject lead nowhere except to annoying/offending people. For that reason, I'm out.

I got there too late. I have recommended felling asap but have also offered to do a valuation assessment so the owners can seek some compensation/reimbursement. I am familiar with the Heliwell system but gather that CAVAT gives a better monetary value. I have never used it though - anyone know if it is easy enough to use? I am hoping to do the course later this year but that'll be too late for this job.
