  1. How would they bring any enforcement action then?
  2. Blimey, your TO must like his office! I am surprised he/she wouldn't meet you to talk through the job. Bear in mind that at the end of the day it will be just as hard for the local authority to prove what is covered by a historic area TPO as it is for you to prove what isn't covered!
  3. There are some cracking comments at the end of the article. Apparently in Australia the authorities erect a big old billboard sign that reads "this sign replaces vandalised trees and will be removed once newly planted trees have grown to replace the damaged trees" That way the perpetrators don't enjoy the benefit of the views opened up by the lost tree.

  5. I am no CAD expert having just taught myself the basics recently out of necessity. It seems to have some differences such as the way you zoom and pan and enter commands, but I think once these concepts have been grasped it looks ok. If you have never ever used CAD before it might be a bit confusing - it has taken me weeks to grasp some of the basics. They do sell a manual as well which hopefully should point us in the right direction.
  6. I am off to South Africa for 2 weeks on Friday. That's taking the edge off my January! (sorry, couldn't resist)
  7. I am in the same position Targettrees. I have just downloaded the free trial of TurboCad Deluxe 16 and so far it seems pretty good. Certainly detailed and precise enough for what most arbs would need CAD for.
  8. That is rubbish. But if you are looking for sympathy you are not going to get it here. Pull yourself together man!
  9. Don't do yourself down chap - it is obvious you are pretty knowledgeable and very passionate and that counts for a lot more in an interview than a qualification.
  10. I am in a similar place hamadryad. I have done the tech cert and some freelance survey work for a number of companies, but finding someone to take you on and allow you to develop step by step is pretty hard, particularly at the moment as most consultancies just don't seem to have that much work on due to low demand for development site surveys. On the CAD front: i have been teaching myself recently on a friend's old 2000 version. I recently found some software that I am probably going to buy soon called TurboCad. It appears to do everything that AutoCad does but for much less money. The Professional version is still almost a grand, but the 'deluxe' version is only £79 and seems to do all we would need it for i.e. 2D drafting. Check it out: TurboCAD Software - Premium CAD software for Professional 2D and 3D Design You can download a free 15 day trial to see how you get on with it.
  11. Ha ha. Love the "sorry" shout!
  12. That's true. However, if it is a legal requirement that's different. The HSE leaflet that dillsue provided a link for says the HSE can inspect your company documents and if you are found not to have legally required insurances you can be fined up to £2500 per day that you operated uninsured!! Bloody red-tape.
  13. Woo hoo, snow here! Got about 10cm at the mo. No way I am doing the 45 mins on the M4 this morning.
  14. Awesome! How long did that take?!
  15. Thanks dillsue. I rang the HSE; they agreed they are the enforcement authority for this but refused to advise for certain on whether it was necessary! Useless! Might ring them again tomorrow and see if I get through to someone more helpful.
  16. Nice one Rupe! Nothing here in Bristol yet....come on snow, do yer worst!!
  17. Yes, we are shopping about. It's kind of annoying that we'll be shelling out around £350 for EL insurance that we know we'll never use - as if one of us would sue the company that we own!! I hate insurance!
  18. Ok, thanks. Looks like we'll go for the full whack then!
  19. I am trying to purchase Professional Indemnity insurance at the moment. The cover would be for two of us - equal shareholders and directors of the company. We are being told by one insurer that we would still need to purchase employer's liability insurance as well (which doubles the premium!) - is this correct? In our minds we have no employees so this doesn't make sense, but of course if it is a legal requirement for some reason we will buy it all. Anyone have any experience of this?
  20. Also from Go Outdoors - try the Hanwag boots. I tried the Meindl's there because I always had the Meindl chainsaw boots which were brilliant, but the Hanwags were more comfy and are also of German build quality. Apparently all our military and police boots are made by them.
  21. Nice photos of an interesting job Dan. Luckily it sounds like you are thick skinned enough to see past all the criticism that gets slung at those brave enough to post pictures of their work! I agree with gibbon; the final result looks ok really.
  22. Although other branded plastic bags are available...
  23. The council I work for has put a freeze on all spending for training at the moment. It seems a short sighted cost saving method to me, but it may be a short term freeze I guess. We are going through a big re-structure as well - next year we won't have our own desks and be encouraged to work from home more and hot-desk in a more communal office. The old bods that have been there for years are up in arms but I think it's probably the way forward if managed right. No doubt there will be some pretty major teething problems at the beginning though, as everyone will be more reliant on the IT system which is currently pretty poop...

    yo yo

I blame the tree. Always blame the trees...should all be cut down as fast as possible so they stop getting in our way.
  25. Don't make any assumptions yet Arbgirl - when I did it I located the car park in a totally different place than everyone I spoke to afterwards but still passed. As you know, there is often more than one correct answer:001_smile:
