  1. A pork bap and a few tinnies. A fleece. Nice to see a few of you chaps there.
  2. The AA isn't perfect by any means, but I think if you want to keep up to date on latest research, legislation etc then membership makes sense. The journal's are interesting reading and you stay in the loop re training courses etc.
  3. Really? That's interesting. Any more details?
  4. Ok, a vascular dysfunction. Thanks chaps. Would be interesting to know why it is only the 'frisia' variety that is suffering but I see what you mean Tony about it being unlikely that the top bods will look in to it.
  5. I am guessing there may be a climatic reason, possibly due to some very wet summers. Would love to know more though. Tony? Dave?
  6. Who knows what is knocking out most of the 'frisia' variety? They are dying off in droves here - I can only remember seeing 2 this spring/summer that weren't in serious decline. I remember reading about this somewhere before, but as so often happens, promptly forgot what I read:mad1:
  7. Top class. Andy Summerley taught the majority of my tech cert and was excellent.
  8. Few pics from my recent trip to Perhentian islands, Malaysia. My wife did her open water course out there so we got to do some dives together at last which was great.
  9. I was meaning to post a link to Alpkit on here too. Reckon their little drybags with the shoulder straps would make good rope bags - not bad for £17.50.
  10. You need to use the web search mate - a 2 second google search gave me this page: European Pine Sawfly, HYG-2555-95
  11. I am off to Malaysia on weds for 2 weeks - can't wait to get some diving in. When I went in 92 the snorkelling was amazing to I am hoping it is still as good as my memories!
  12. Best of luck guys - definitely worth taking time off for some last minute swatting. Don't think I would have passed if I hadn't done that - even more so for the management day!
  13. Although I totally agree with you, I am not certain how the examiners would react to leaving stubs as it flies in the face of traditional arboriculture a bit. I would hope if the reasoning was explained well then the examiners would mark this favourably.
  14. Nah - I haven't got a tv but got given the first series on dvd. Comedy genius!
  15. So that didn't work! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j94V5u53bLA]YouTube - Flight of the Conchords - Business Time[/ame]
  16. Anybody else a fan? Cracks me up <object width="560" height="340"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j94V5u53bLA&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j94V5u53bLA&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="560" height="340"></embed></object>
  17. Yeah I reckon that seems right. Can't think of much else on that one.
  18. Timing of pruning must be in there - eg prune cherries in summer as resins aid the 'sealing' of a fresh wound. Not pruning in frost conditions... Keeping tools clean and free from possible contaminants... Prune trees as early in their life as possible (good formative pruning etc) so that larger wounds are not needed to be made later on in the tree's life.
  19. Is a fully certified climbing system necessary over and above a system that meets the requirements of LOLER?
  20. Ain't it a beaut Dave?! Didn't clock any big suckers but I wasn't looking too hard. Not sure of the name of the woods but they were very near Chipperfield.
  21. Found this stunning old sweet chestnut in a wood in Herts today. A large limb had failed and this chicken of the woods was fruiting on the fallen limb. You can see the brown cubicle rot that the fungus has caused to the internal wood on the fallen limb. I couldn't say for sure whether the fungus caused the failure or whether it has colonised the limb since it fell. My gut would be that the Laetiporus was present for a long time before the failure though.
  22. Here are a few from a horse chestnut removal a few weeks ago. Terry did the dismantle - I just got a shot of him from above as I installed a pulley block in a neighbouring beech.
