  1. Do lots of your local companies use subbie climbers? If they do, do you know what they are paying? Price yourself honestly. If you are top notch then companies hopefully won't mind paying you top money. Similarly, if there are tree jobs you wouldn't feel comfortable taking on, don't ask for too much. My tuppence worth.
  2. I often wonder the same thing Dave. Not far from my house there is a fantastic green space called Durdham Downs - great for picnics, football etc. At the moment there is a large funfair on the downs and the designated parking for the hundreds of cars that come and go daily is actually on the downs itslelf all over the rooting area of the trees! They are great mature limes, ash and horse chestnut that form an avenue along the side of the downs and alongside a road. I dread to think what compaction forces are affecting all the roots along the avenue. The local arb officers must have seen all this but the council don't seem to have thought about asking the fair to move the car parking just 10 meters or so away from the trees. Grrrr!
  3. When deadwooding in a location where appearance is less important I often snap or kick off deadwood instead of using the saw for a target pruning cut. I figure that (as has already been said) the tree has more or less compartmentalised itself in that area and is preparing (eventually) to shed the dead limb. By applying a bit of force the dead limb will fracture at it's weakest point which is likely to be the natural place of abscission. Makes sense to me but I am no authority on such things! In formal locations I will tend to leave target pruning cuts though.
  4. MT-03. I can't say I know alot about bikes but I like the look of this kind of bike. Your husky supermoto looks like a whole lot of fun. Damn, I need to get my license...
  5. Not a biker yet.....but planning to get there soon! Missus says I can't ride a bike and climb trees for a job though - too many accident statistics piled against me! She'll come round though. I quite fancy something like this:
  6. Congrats Bob! What a great thing to do with your son. I have dived a bit - can't say it is a proper regular hobby of mine due to time and finance - but I absolutely love it. I am off to Malaysia in June so hoping to get lots of diving in there. My wife is going to do her PADI open water so we can do some diving together. Have dived in Lake Malawi, Zanzibar, Fiji, Turkey and Greece so far....oh, and the Isles of Scilly once as well.
  7. Ha ha! I was wondering how long it was before someone said that! Looked like a nice day mate. Nice one.
  8. No, just a good self-advancing hitch. Probably a VT.
  9. Great vid - Pete McSheffrey did post it before but no worries, it's a classic.
  10. A good general tree book with lots of info is: 'Trees: Their use, management, cultivation and biology' by Bob Watson. Welcome to the forum mate, hope you find it useful.
  11. Cool - I live in Westbury on Trym so we are almost neighbours. I'll PM you my number just in case you need someone to show you where to get a good beer around here...
  12. Hoorah for Fletcher Stewart (thanks for my boots!) Boo on you treequip!
  13. Am I missing something? It doesn't seem to do much more than a decent hitch?
  14. Welcome to the city of a million tree surgeons! Hope you find some work soon mate. Whereabouts are you?
  15. Shame it had to be a stuck up old brit making the complaints?! I thought it was pretty funny.
  16. Ha ha, nice - can I have it for my avatar?!
  17. Ha ha, really? How embarrasing - I have never heard a Monkeypuzzle called that before. Off to hide in a dark corner....
  18. Spot on with which tree John? Funky muzzle or the chilly pine?
  19. Cool. Specify the correct fencing and you are away. Details are in the BS. By the way, you describe the tree as a 'scraggy topped' spruce - is it worthy of retention according to the flow chart in the BS?
  20. So will they have to work within the Root Protection Area? What does the calculation tell you?
  21. Still works for me? Go to http://www.thermoecology.net if you want to find it there.
  22. Don't do it!! But if you had to, £120-150.
