  1. I did the VTA course recently. I thought it was very well run - Mike is a real tree boffin but totally accessible for questions and discussion. Alot of the theory on this course you will have covered in your tech cert Steve, but I found it useful to hear it again. And great to get out and have a look at some trees with an old hand.
  2. Respect to Qtip and the rest of the team - looked like a very professional job. Did he take the 200t up as well as the 88 then if he cut notches to rest the saw in? Or were these done in advance previously?
  3. Great vid of a smooth looking job, thanks. The song is from the 'O Brother Where art Thou' soundtrack isn't it?
  4. Here is another fruiting body showing the water droplets. Inonotus hispidus I think.
  5. As you have already said, everyone is different. My setup is: Komet butterfly harness (which I now hate and want to replace!) New England tachyon rope VT friction hitch (roblon 8mm cord and a hitch climber) Yale wire core flipline with snaphook, controlled with an ISC rope-grab. Cambium saver
  6. Great pic Hazzygawa, thanks for posting it here. Don't be put off by the debate your picture has started - it's all good stuff and not meat as a criticism to you. Out of interest, how long did each tree take? Do you feel much time was saved accessing the crown with the MEWP? Looks like a fun job either way.
  7. Allow yourself enough time for each question. I think each paper is 1hr30mins right? So allow 30 minutes for each answer and don't go over this. Nothing worse than running out of time as you are writing the last answer and knowing that you have more to say... To use time well and maximise point scoring, use bullet points, tables and diagrams to communicate in less words what you are trying to say. I seem to remember that 'theories of motivation' came up in our personnel management section - revise at least 3 theories that you can summarise using flow diagrams/pyramids etc. And finally, don't do the exam 'post-mortem' with fellow students where you compare answers etc. It's too late to change anything anyway and generally just makes you more worried about the results.
  8. Ta for explaining it to me Justin - all sorted now.
  9. Thermal imaging is listed as one of the methods on their website.
  10. Thanks for sending the spare parts Justin (and my lovely new tachyon rope, mmmmm). So I feel like a right div - I just can't seem to get these things to fit on properly. I have screwed the ear muff back plate on to the helmet but it sits very awkwardly on the helmet surface and I can see them snapping without too much bother. Pics below - have I missed the point somewhere?
  11. Ha ha, love it! They are buggers aren't they!
  12. Ah, I see. Thanks Justin. PM on its way.
  13. Hi guys, Just took delivery of my lovely shiny Stein helmet. I already have some peltor ear muffs that I am going to fit on to it - I have been supplied with the correct screws. It seems to me that the plastic frame for the peltor muffs doesn't sit flush with the side of the helmet. Do I need to cut off the section that slots in to the hole on petzl/husky helmets in order for them to fit properly? Cheers for your help, Paul
  14. It may be released as a 'Draft for Development' - like a normal standard to use for guidance but open for an indefinite period of time for constant feedback to the commitee.
  15. It's hard to see where your breakable targets on the ground are, but would you be happy spiking up as far as the main fork and knocking each limb off one at a time? You maybe have a throwline and then pulling line on each one to send it the right way. What's up with the tight-wad customer?!?! I would be inclined to refuse it to be honest if it is all that dodgy. It makes me mad how someone will not be prepared to stump up the right money but will then tell you such and such cannot be damaged. We are arborists not frigging magicians!!
  16. Is there a major limb on the right subsiding due to a fracture somewhere? That seems quite a distinct gap in the crown about a quarter of the way in from the right.
  17. Hello mate. Legs are getting there now, thanks. First day back at work today - monday and tuesday I couldn't even walk down stairs without using 3 hands to hold on! Managed 3hrs 55mins in the end which was ok. Did you go to Capel? Hope to catch up with you at the arb show in June. Cheers.

  18. Unlucky Joe! Try a more subtle approach next time, ha ha!
  19. Top job John! Let us know if you get a local result.
  20. Here is a link to the course info from RFS - includes the content etc Royal Forestry Society of England, Wales and Northern Ireland Home Page The trainers are Tree Life training:Home Page I think it is regarded as the premier professional qualification in the country, equivalent with a degree. As far as I know Treelife offer it as 25 teaching sessions spaced out over 18 months - there is alot of reading and study to do in your own time. I would like to do it myself some time but not quite yet. Hope this helps Mike.
