  1. Nice one Simon! That was a good gig to get. See you there on Monday.
  2. Shame I can't make it - moving house that day.
  3. But your earlier post said that all ancients have more veteran characteristics than you can shake a stick at:confused1:
  4. Are you involved in delivering the course with Tree Life Dave?
  5. Some good info here: IN13 - Veteran Trees: A guide to good management (page 1)
  6. I have always thought that veterans should display a number of different characteristics - not just age and dead wood. For example: - cavities - water pockets - flaking bark - woodpecker holes - large dead wood - fungal fruits - scars/lightening strikes -and more... I seem to remember reading that a vet should have a minimum of 'x' number of characteristics. I guess it's a bit of a tick box way of classing a veteran but it gives the weight to characteristics rather than just age or deadwood.
  7. No. It's my old stomping ground though. What's up?
  8. I have noticed that mature Beech around here are fruiting more than usual. I wasn't aware of the term mast year until now...
  9. To be honest I though the original poster was joking. His name does include the word scam after all. Either way, I have seen worse pruning jobs.
  10. How about doing a bit of root investigation (e.g. air-spade) along the edge of the existing building to quantify what roots are actually there? Although the new building will be within the normal RPA as suggested by BS5837 it is down to the arb to judge what effect the development will have on the trees. If there are only a few small roots adjacent to/under the existing building you could argue the development can go ahead. If you do you would need to write a pretty robust method statement to demonstrate how the trees will be protected though.
  11. I have a pair of boots made by Hanwag and they are really excellent. Similar looking to the Meindl boots and also made in Germany I think. Apparently Hanwag supply the army and police force with boots. HanWag Tatra GTX Trek Boots :: Army Navy Store
  12. Ooops! Sorry, I thought it was freely available to download. My bad...I will check for a weblink instead next time.
  13. Treelife will run a course on a date to suit you if there are enough takers. I'm not planning on organising another any time soon - lots of people on here said they were keen as mustard but then failed to actually book up which was a shame.
  14. Report Writing I arranged a date for this course open to all Arbtalk members last year. It's a good course to learn the basics of putting together a report.
  15. I have a feeling that there is a 2008 version though which I haven't got on this PC.
  16. Similar to you Robert - I have read/heard that they are often breached, either underneath or straight over the top. Having said that I would be interested to know about the deep barrier you mention as I have a case at the moment of Poplar roots disturbing a drive and front garden - the tree is far enough away that root pruning won't de-stabilise the tree so I would like to investigate it further.
  17. Thanks Robert. I am there tomorrow doing the root pruning so that would be good timing! Back to your thread Andy....
  18. Aye, Ruskins are a good bunch. Robert - we still need to get together to look at the three trees to move in Edgbaston.
  19. Apologies for spelling your surname wrong - it's that sort of behaviour that ensures I don't win prizes for writing.
  20. Well done Tony for being awarded the 'Landscape Planning Group Best Dissertation' for the online BSc from Myersough. Top notch sir!
  21. Nice bike Mick! I bought a bike a couple of months ago...I have only had mountain bikes before but ended up doing more long road rides than gnarly single tracks. I am loving the new one - it's just as tiring but you get there quicker:biggrin:
  22. You don't need an NPTC ticket to drag brash, carry logs, make tea and feed a chipper under supervision!
  23. Best of luck Marc and fair play for offering yourself for experience. We are a bit far away probably as we are south Birmingham. Hope you find something. Have you tried turning up on site at a local contractors to offer your services face to face? If you look fit and enthusiastic I can't imagine you being turned away!
