  1. I thought you were after consultancy/ecology work Tony?
  2. Ok, thanks Dave. It's been a while since I did the Thermal Imaging course with Andrew and Marcus. I am still interested to see if it will make it in our 'toolbox' for tree assessment.
  3. Have you got any copies of the thermal imaging photos we could see?
  4. Agreed - take a look at the tips of the crown. You may be able to see where the growth curves/kinks as the tree optimizes itself. If the tips are all leaning as well then the tree has probably moved recently. Any chance of air-spading around the base to look at the suspected root damage?
  5. We found a similar situation in Birmingham last week. They had completely defoliated every Bird Cherry in a housing estate.
  6. Sounds like a business opportunity for someone...there's a potential gap in the market here. ...now I have actually followed Paul's LANTRA link...perhaps not.
  7. Nice website Matt - hope it brings in more custom for you. I like your airspade page. I found a couple of broken links: - the link on the homepage to BS3998 - the link on the right hand side of the page under 'services included' for 'arb consultancy' brings up a blank page.
  8. Calm down! I didn't say yours was fluffy and I didn't slate you. My point is that a policy should reflect reality. If a company uses the policy you have posted here and actually adheres to it then that's great.
  9. That's true. I guess it just seemed a bit funny talking about how non-arbs wielding chainsaws skew the statistics about H&S in our industry, but then saying that as a seasoned professional he had had multiple incidents. You're right - no point in hiding the truth. Is arb inherently dangerous though? Are you really 'lucky' if you have a career without an incident? Damn, I am on a track I didn't mean to be on now. As I previously said, I thought Ian's comments were very succinct and informative.
  10. My advice would be to research the various areas covered by a policy and then sit down with the client and go through the realistic options for them. Any company can have a fluffy environmental policy, but does it actually mean anything? If you can, take the opportunity to implement some real change - assuming they need it that is!
  11. Ian's a very good chap who really knows his onions. I thought his comments were on the whole very good - the comments about his mishaps and the Poplar would probably have been better left unsaid as they appeared to undo the good comments.
  12. I would ask if you client is happy for you to discuss with the TO first - and invite the client along if you are going to meet up on site. Some clients may see discussions with the council without their input as undermining your relationship.
  13. Don't forget these too: Institute of Chartered Foresters ICF
  14. Great video Josh, looked a smooth job. Is Charlie working with you yet?
  15. Is that you Monsieur Dye?

  16. Nice pics Tommy B. I went there for the first time the 3 weeks ago. Here are a few of my piccies...
  17. Good paper although a little out of date now in my opinion. The key phrase to sum up the paper has to be: "strong and vibrant future for arboriculture; focusing on tree benefits rather than the preoccupation with tree problems that has dominated the evolution of urban tree management to date". Since 2009 a lot more research in to tree benefits has happened - interestingly enough by Forest Research of the FC. See this excellent paper:Forest Research - Forest Research publishes new reports on the benefits of green infrastructure Thanks for posting the link Rob, nice one.
  18. Have to work tomorrow which is a shame as I probably would have watched it. We have American neighbours so it would have been a laugh to watch it with them.
  19. You have obviously missed the point Tony - IT LOOKS LIKE A CUTE LITTLE BABY ELEPHANT:laola:
  20. Gross!!! That is some funky looking fungi!
  21. Hope it works out for you. Working on the other side of the fence will hopefully give you an interesting insight in to the public sector which should be valuable.
  22. I live in a relatively small town now, and at this stage of my life I don't think I would want to go more rural. I have lived in small country villages in Suffolk - they were beautiful and had great pubs but after a couple of years I felt I needed to get back to a bigger town. I always like the idea of a proper rural place to live but I know I am too much of a people person to stick out the isolation.
  23. I don't know very much about ecology, but where I live (Malvern Hills) the conservators are felling alot of native trees on the hillsides. I couldn't work out why so I asked one of them whilst out walking the other day. Apparently the trees cause too much shade for certain ground flora to thrive which in turn attracts certain bird species. Maybe it's the same idea where you are?
  24. Are those your words or are you quoting the council?
