  1. I saw that too - was quite interesting wasn't it? It made me wonder how much of a veteran tree's hollow stem is down to fungal attack and how much is down to the constant munching of insects; there was a lot of noise coming from those hungry critters!
  2. No Tony I don't. This thread just reminded me (and tommer obviously) of another thread a while ago where there were a lot of comments about protestors being bunny huggers etc...and lots of gung-ho tree surgeons showing off about felling trees in front of protestors. For my tuppence worth, I do think we need to seriously upgrade our railway system and move away from constant widening of the motorway network. Our railway network is pitiful compared to many European countries. This will inevitably mean sacrificing pockets of the current 'natural' environment. I don't know alot about the specifics of HS2 but it would be good to see the consultation resulting in the avoidance of blasting straight through ancient woodland sites.
  3. The responses in this thread are an embarrassment to Arbtalk. If you want to apply for the job, then apply for it. If that means picking up the phone to ring the employer to ask for an email address to send your CV to then do that. Everyone has opinions about companies and other traders - these can be discussed in private. A thread offering jobs is not the place to air grievances. If threads like this put off prospective employers from advertising jobs, all users of the forum lose out.
  4. I think that may be Pseudotrametes gibbosa, although it looks to be bigger than most specimens that I have seen before.

For sure. Don't get me wrong - I am not saying that the way we trade is morally acceptable as it definitely isn't. However, as a country that is involved in global trade and is a permanent member of the UN Security Council I think we have a duty to have some involvement in peace keeping missions. I think the idea that we should 'just leave them all to kill each other' stinks personally.

Do you think it would be more morally acceptable to buy their oil in the good times but then stand back and leave innocent civilians to be harmed by the despotic leader when the going gets rough?
  7. Nice. I am trying to make a plan to get to the ISA do in Oregon next summer.... A tent in Cirencester will do this year though.
  8. ...which is all about the cohesive strength of soil.....which is all about the moisture content.... VTA and SIA will tell you some of the story but perhaps we would all learn more if we knew more about the soil.
  9. Not knowing much of SIA (I haven't taken the time to read the links, sorry) are VTA and SIA at odds with eachother? Does it make sense to take sides if they approach tree assessment from different angles with different objectives? It seems to me these discussions can quickly turn in to one vs the other e.g. the previous discussions about Thermal imaging and other technologies.
  10. Good video Rhystree. I actually don't have a problem with the voiceover - the editing of some of the sentences isn't very smooth but I think the well spoken mature voice is fine. After all, your target market may be mature, well spoken people. Although it might not have the personal touch that the others had, I think it gives a more professional image overall. Plus your video doesn't have any bloopers like one-handed cutting, missing bolts and cutting without a visor. Nice one!
  11. Brilliant pictures Steve - that looks like some above average work to do....does it make conny hedges back in Wales feel even worse?! Thanks for sharing your pics.
  12. Funnily enough I have that book on the shelf at home but not here at the office! Will get reading tonight...
  13. Does anyone have any experience with installing Silva Cell systems? I am particularly interested in the appropriate soil to be used to backfill the frames. My assumption would be that a mix of native soil from the site mixed with some organic compost would be better than importing non-native top soil. Any comments/experience appreciated, thanks.
  14. Nice one mate! All the best in your new job...
  15. I must have missed the point then - I had a Mac mini for 3 years and never really got on with it. It was nice to get back to good ol' Windows on my new laptop.
  16. I am surprised at that - I would have thought you have less worries about space over in the USA. I like the term Urban Compaction....it is engrained in planning policy here now although more often referred to as urban intensification and in-filling. Greenbelt countryside around towns is almost sacrosanct so in-filling existing urban areas is all the rage. This is putting alot of pressure on urban greenspace and parks/sports fields/gardens are being built on everywhere. In my opinion this has a long term detrimental effect of making urban areas less attractive as places to live...maybe continuing the urban sprawl is better than that?
  17. :blushing:Sorry David! Got my mixed all words up.
  18. Will do Tony. I am afraid it probably won't be as detailed and erudite as Sir Sorensen's summary of the Arb conference but I will do my best!
  19. Hands up if you find it frustrating that trees are often low on the agenda when it comes to development and design of the urban landscape.... Do you wish that town planners, landscape architects and building architects listened to Arbs more? Would you like Arboriculture to be taken more seriously by other professions...thereby improving your long-term job prospects and making your working life more interesting? If you have answered yes to any of the above then you may want to consider being at the Institute of Chartered Foresters conference in Birmingham in April this year. The conference is going to bring together lots of professionals from across the globe and the line up of speakers will be very varied. Hope to see some of you there:thumbup: ICF_2011_FLYER_A5_STANDARD.pdf Trees_People_and_the_Built_Environment_Programme pdf.pdf
