  1. Sorbothanes are really good too.
  2. Looks like it's confirmed. Try the AA website. BS3998: 2010 Tree Work - Recommendations
  3. May as well kill everyone that could possibly commit a crime then:confused1:
  4. I disagree with the death penalty although I can see why people would support it. Hard to say if my view would change if my family were murdered, but I hope my ethics would stand up. Stuff like this is much more progressive and healing for society in my opinion: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_and_Reconciliation_Commission_(South_Africa)
  5. Nice to see a journalist giving an alternative point of view on trees and subsidence problems: Trees are worth the insurance risk - Telegraph
  6. Fair enough, I guess each tree officer plays it differently.
  7. I don't think there would be a public notice for a Conservation Area notification. Does your LA have a tree officer? If not a wrongly identified tree may have slipped through the net.
  8. Cool, thanks for posting these. Hope to see you there again on the 6th Janey.
  9. Crumbs Andy. Will be thinking of you on Tuesday. Well done for kicking it.

That's a real shame. Here in the midlands it works really well, even without the GLONASS. I can get at least 12 satellites in use even in dense woodland. Sorry for the derail....I am interested in this thread because I have always poo-pooed the Ipad as a bit of an unnecessary gimmick. It's good to see people are making them work well instead of just being another toy to surf the net on. I am trying to get our company working more efficiently including working remotely. It seems a tablet combined with some kind of 'cloud' hosting like Drop-box is a pretty savvy way to work.

Really? Have you got the GLONASS enabled version? This new offering from Motion looks like the mutts nuts...CL900 Tablet PC - Rugged Small Form Factor Tablet

The Motion computing tablets look great for a semi-rugged PC to use in the field. Still on the pricey side though. J3500 Tablet PC - The rugged, all-in-one device that is the ideal productivity tool Ref the Magellans - we have one of the new(ish) Mobile Mapper 100s. It performs very well even in dense tree cover - much better than the old MMCX.
  13. Thanks chaps. It seems a bit lame to say that was my first impression when I saw it. My Collins tree guide pictures don't look much like the leaf sample I took, but I agree with you.

Ok, sorry. The guy who developed it told me his clients are using it on tablets from the truck. I must have wrongly interpreted tablet as IPad!

  16. Brill, thanks Dave. Pics 6 and 7 are great.
  17. Can anyone help me identify this tree? I didn't get a picture of the whole tree - it was approx 5m tall on a single stem, dividing in to multi stems at about 2 metres. Smooth bark. Apparently is has white flowers in the spring. The bud and leaf arrangement are most like Amelanchier to me, but the leaves are wrong for that. I am stumped! (nothing new there)
  18. There's a lot of horror in the news at the moment. The situation in the horn of Africa is really really bad as you may have seen on the news. BBC News - East Africa hunger crisis If you have a moment and can spare some cash please consider donating some to help the disaster response - here: DEC Thanks.
  19. Go on then steve. Hit that big red button.
  20. Hi Prospect, Welcome to the forum. I made the same move as you several years after I graduated from University. It wasn't easy but well worth it to do something you enjoy. I am based in the West Midlands for work and have had some dealings with Warwickshire College. In my honest opinion I believe there are better colleges around, particularly if you are looking to do the Foundation Degree. I believe the best way to get yourself kick-started in Arb is to do some intensive training to get your relevant NPTC tickets and then get out there and graft for a good boss. You will learn so much more actually working than you will going straight in to a long full time course. However, I am NOT saying that a course is a bad idea, quite the opposite. Once you have some practical experience, then consider doing some study. It will be easier and more rewarding because you will be able to apply what you have learnt on the tools. Doing an arb course straight off the bat is weird because you have (I had!) no real reference of what I was learning - alot of it didn't make sense until I started work! There is a good career to be had in Arboriculture if you work at it. Best of luck.
  21. Heads up y'all - interesting seminar at Kew Gardens in September. Lots of use of the word "inclusionality" on the flyer so I would imagine it's one for Tony amongst others. I still have no idea what it means...I ought to look this one up:blushing: Treework 16th September 2011.pdf
  22. This is it - I was there in May. It's at Ardkinglas at the head of Loch Fyne. 64.2 metres http://www.ardkinglas.com/12/46/Additional/Abies_Grandis.html
  23. Cool, this seems like a great app. I am pleased to see that the guidance on the app gives a clear description of the difference between leaf miner damage and the fungal leaf blotch caused by Guignardia aesculi. I will use this I reckon.
