  1. Seeing these 2 guys at a veteran seminar tomorrow unless it's snowed off. Looking forward to it. I couldn't access Nevilles papers via that link Tony?
  2. Hmm, looks like a potentially good site. However, I have registered but can't get to the mapping function anywhere. Any clues?
  3. Looking through Housing Association websites doing some research and came across this job. Might be of interest to someone. Helena Partnerships: Vacancies
  4. Rob, thanks for the books. Duncan passed them on to me today. At first glance the Schmidt book looks like more than my tiny brain can cope with but the Schwarze book looks superb!
  5. This might be worth a look: Arb Pro, Tree Contracting Software for Arborists, Tree Contractors, Tree Surgeons
  6. It sure would be! You've obviously plugged some investment in to your tree library! If I could borrow both for a week or two that would be brill. Thanks.
  7. Most excellent, thanks Rob. I shall treat it with tenderness and care!
  8. Hi Rob - the smaller version you have would be awesome. It is for my MSc yes, next assignment due to Duncan Slater at the end of this month. If it would be easier for you, do you want to leave it in a marked packet for me with Duncan or Mark Johnston? Otherwise I'll send you my address. Cheers mate.
  9. Hmm, I didn't know there were 2 editions of different size. Either would be great!!
  10. I admit this is a bit of a necky request but what the heck...does anyone have a copy of this book they'd be willing to lend me for a few weeks? I'd like to buy the book but it's one of the expensive ones so need a bit of time...
  11. True - when I did it I don't think I bothered using the clinometer I took with me.
  12. I'd be interested to hear the answer to this. I have never liked the idea of using a clinometer or laserace type thing to measure stem diameters as I can't see how it would be accurate unless the tree is a perfect cylinder? The best I have used for tree height only is the Haglof clinometer - nice and small and light...
  13. The only link I can find for that via Google has been removed due to a violation. Do you have another link?
  14. Conifer roots will not regenerate or throw up new growth after the tree has been cut down. They will not therefore cause any direct damage after the tree has been felled. Depending on the clay content, it is possible that the soil around the trees, under the foundations and paving slabs may become wetter after the trees are gone (because the trees are no longer removing water from the soil). This can cause the soil to swell and lift - a phenomenon commonly known as 'heave'. Heave is generally only a problem if the trees are older than the house and the house foundations are too shallow - a relatively uncommon combination these days. Hope that helps.
  15. Are you asking if the tree roots will damage the property after the trees have been felled?
  16. I just started Yoga recently as the transition from climbing every day to a lot of desk work is causing my hips to seize up. I went to an Osteopath last year with a back and knee complaint which comes on when I am running and she recommended lots of stretching. The class I attend is taught by a friend (Home - redkite) and she is really good. It's actually pretty hard work and I feel fairly knackered after a 1 and a quarter hour session. Personally I am not in to the joss sticks and meditation aspect of yoga at all so it was important for me to find the right teacher and the right class.
  17. Cool, good on you Tony. I am still seeing large contract documents that have non-BS specs on them. It's tricky to produce a tender submission and schedule of rates as part of a bid when the contract spec is not up to spec. It's all arse about face - the client only wants AAAC, CHAS, ISO etc companies but them asks them to price for work that is sub-standard in its specification. The same happens with tenders for surveys - I have come across quite a few that want a tree risk survey or a management survey based on BS5837:2005!!
  18. I hate to say "I told you so" a year after the new standard came out.... I am with you Tony - wouldn't it be great for the contractors and consultants to encourage TO's to up their game and get with the new standard.
  19. The PTI certainly won't make you eligible for AA Registered Consultant, but it's a start. I think the PTI is worth doing - as Tony says it's one of very few options to get some kind of accreditation if you don't have a degree or Tech cert. It's probably been said before to you Tony - you wouldn't learn much in terms of VTA on the PTI but it would at least give you some paperwork to back up your skills. Matt has hit the nail on the head though - no training or accreditation will guarantee success, it's how you apply yourself.
  20. As David says, the one day Treelife report writing course is good. I don't think reading BS5837:2005 will help much if you haven't written a report before. The standard is just guidance on assessing the implications of trees with regard to development. I am guessing you want more of a template for how to set out a report? The Treelife course includes a helpful template which you can adapt for your own use.
