Sadly, it will probably never change.

The Yanks just can’t seem to grasp that every country with tight gun control is doing somewhat better on the mass shootings front than they are.

They are like a small child putting their fingers in their ears and going ‘raaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhh’.

Except folks, the lesson of N Ireland, where for the duration of the troubles, a very significent %age of the population were armed, legally or otherwise & mostly concealed carry, and certainly on the law enforcing/law abiding side a significent %age of those armed were rarely sober, or not infrequently drunk/well well over the limit for driving.

But they did, drive that is, and mostly without crashing or causing third part injuries.

And yet we had zero gun massacres(without political motivations), let alone accidental shootings.

So

Why was this?

I could recount various stories from my father, a rather non-partisan farmer, told to him by named known individuals, that would almost beggar belief.

Never mind the tooled-up TA shenaginagans.

Being both Irish and pissed, they probably forgot to load the ammo.

Tsk tsk, TVI

(i) Absolutely not the case, high functioning alcoholics are exactly as described, highly functional, despite being "drunk" by ordinary/others standards.

PS

(ii) The (mostly) law abiding/enforcing  lot certainly did/do not identify themselves as Irish either.

Ah! Understood.

But seconds after the threat was neutralised, he didn't shoot at everyone else in sight.

I'm doubt if armed teachers would prevent a few deaths, but would almost certainly reduce the total killed. Some of the rural schools may wait 20-30 minutes before officers arrive.

But there would also be a gun to be taken and misused where before there wasn't one.

This is probably the biggest problem with what is a truly crazy idea for so many reasons.

Need a gun? Find a teacher.

Yup, everyone would know which teachers were tooled up.  Instant targets.

In Russian schools the students drill for active shooter scenarios. They are trained to rush the attacker/s as a mob and take them down, instead of hiding under their desks like rabbits. This is actually the most effective course of action, if they can pull it off, and it instills a sense of positive self-protection in the kids. The mindset of "We are not victims, you mess with us, we will have you!" should benefit society as a whole, where kids have a certain level of situational awareness and look out for each other. Armed teachers is a first step in this direction, I applaud it.
