I'm with you on that Felix. The main thrust of my position in this debate though, is that I don't believe that Islam, right at its heart, is a peaceful ideology.

Before we can find a realistic solution to this problem we need our politicians to ask the hard questions. Just saying that most Muslims are peaceful, while true in most cases, doesn't address the root of the problem.

Until we ask the hard questions, all we will be doing is papering over the cracks.

I think we agree on the ultimate aim if not the means of getting there. :001_smile:

The police were onsite within 8 minutes. Not bad in my opinion. What does Corbyn want? Police on every street, in every town, 24 hours a day.

Perhaps The shadow home secretary could come up with some figures as to how much this would cost?????

Would we get the same response time if some nutter(s) turned up in rural Suffolk, or deep in the Yorkshire Dales?, I doubt it.

I'm no fan of Corbyn or his sidekick, but Mrs May was atrocious as Home Secretary......... sooner people take this onboard the better.

Talking about coming up with some figures....... Ask the Conservative Party about that.

Hi eggs, of course we wouldn't get that response time where I live. I wouldn't expect anyone there for at least half an hour.

My point was that a response time of 8 minutes is excellent. Would spending more money on the police have got them there any quicker? I doubt it.

Would spending more money have prevented the attack? Well, that's debatable.

Well, cutting the front line units to the bone certainly isn't working. May was warned when she was Home Secretary that intelligence gathering was suffering due to the cuts but chose to ignore it because she knew better.

Be nice if Arb equipment thefts had an 8 min response time!

Definitely agree with you on that one, Ti.

About time I should perhaps mention the successful Israeli approach, to these perps.

And they are surrounded by them.

BUT, Throwing money at the security forces is NOT the answer, most of it will be wasted on bloated overtime claims and pensions, a more targeted approach is required.

cheers

I don't understand this argument surrounding Saturday. The police did a fantastic job and dealt with the situation appropriately in a very quick timescale. The intelligence services know who these guys are half the time and apparently have stopped a further 5 attacks in recent months. Where it falls apart for me is the lack of action when suspects are identified

I think everybody agrees that the police and other emergency services did a fantastic job in reacting to the mindless atrocity committed on Saturday. The argument is that unless the police can be proactive then they will be restricted to showing up and shooting the killers after they have murdered many people. The cuts have prevented intelligence gathering which is the only way to stop these events before the damage is done. You can't protect against a specific threat unless you know about it. As the law stands, you can't be locked up for your individual beliefs unless you act upon them. When an extremist is identified, all that can be done is monitoring them until them actually commit an offence and that takes personnel, as does working with the community who are most likely the first people to notice radicalisation. :001_smile:
