The man "unknowingly destroyed" the nest on an estate but the RSPB says nests are "obvious".

K

that is very odd !!  I own some woodland and a Goshawk has nested in there in the past ( in a neighbours woodland more recently )  and I was informed that no forestry operations are permitted within 400 metres , which effectively made my own land out of bounds for 4-5 months , which displeased me greatly !! I was strongly advised by local raptor group ( bird of prey spotters ) and police wildlife officer about the severity of offence if i was to even disturb it , let alone deliberately fell tree with nest in !!!

Don't think he deliberately felled it knowing it had a nest in . He just did not do due diligence . In any event he is a knob .

Just to speculate here and I am doing only that...  Suspect is identified and interviewed: the matter is put to the CPS who say 'insufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction'.  Police and RSPB say '*** it; give us £100 then'.

Pure speculation and £100 sort of voluntary payment (it's not a fine) is pathetic

any one felling a tree this time of year should check for nests ( in tree or where it will land ) as the report says it is huge and very hard to miss ...most probably owner would of been informed of it's presence !!

Whilst we’re in the bounds of wild, unsubstantiated speculation I’ll have a punt....

What if estate owner is a senior figure in the trouser leg funny handshake brigade and there is a historic persecution of anything that presents any real or imagined threat to the obscene practice of raising dumb birds that will boost the ego of inadequate morons with shotguns and, since this single tree was identified as a the only priority requirement for immediate felling, and the daft labourer was despatched as the fall guy, and the Chief constable is a grand moose and a regular lunch guest at said estate and intervened so as to avoid any heat or light falling upon the real guilty party....?

Like I say, just a wild unsubstantiated stab in the dark. Funny how it seems (to me) to have a greater ring of credibility than the report.....

In my totally imaginary made up story the chief constable is a keen shooting man 😁
