I don't know the numbers, but I don't imagine that many people fly from Leeds to London.
HS2 is (should be) a dead duck by now.
More efficient trains on current routes would be a start.

I haven’t looked closely enough at HS2 to have a strongly held view either way Mark - other than to say I can’t really see how 10 minutes off a journey is sufficient to justify the sacrifices.

I know it’s considerably bigger than that very simplistic view obvs.

Less air travel has to be an aspiration rather than the seemingly obsessive expansion that seems to be fashionable.

it is not about time saving but greatly increasing carrying capacity .....still unjustifiably expensive though !!!

And, perhaps, over taken by events - if we’ve learned anything (and I’m sure ‘we’ haven’t) from the Covid scenario, LESS movement of people is better than more in a world with highly transmissible viruses.

If government (regional / national / international) can’t keep pace with change, maybe people power will do it for them.

Wife starts a new job tomorrow.

She saw it advertised, liked the look of it but it was based just shy of 200 miles away.

She applied, interviewed, was the preferred candidate but she said she’d only accept the post if it was ‘work from home.’

Like I say, she starts tomorrow- would never have happened pre Covid.

I ve a strongly held view... 😉  anyway, air travel has always been seen as a massive viral vector - so this should be the  wake up call, ebola and others loved those air miles in yr pocket.  K

APPLE.NEWS

Regular exercise reduces the chances of dying from infectious diseases such as COVID-19 by...

Take the ONS stats about 27% of reported covid deaths not actually being due to but with covid then add the exercise study etc !!.
The money, industry and impetus behind Covid has a momentum all of its own right now that bears zero relationship to actual risk anymore. Sadly the news about the young people most effected in the jobs market being the least vulnerable by a huge margin to covid was all too predictable.
