Hey all,Being the wrong side of 40(a while ago i might add),i came into climbing late in life.I do however pride myself on my professionalism, positive work ethic and attention to detail, even though i work for my local authority! and subbie to a local tree company. Our council work load recently has almost doubled and as a consequence we have had to sub contract some work out.

On friday we worked with a private company and watching these guys work took my breath away,so quick around the tree so fluent it was literally a sight too behold.

I was climbing in the 70s when the "best" climbers went up with just a lanyard as a strop, not wanting to be burdened with a rope. Coming from a rock climbing background I quickly took to the doubled rope technique and prussic knot but I was never better than competent.

Looking at the young guys now many of them are far more agile, fit and adept than I ever was, even allowing for better equipment. My former boss who held a superintendent position in the arb departmentt of a large public garden from around 1985 agrees with me.

Climbing isn't everything about running an arb business though, it always amazed me that the people that ran the business I did work for couldn't do any of the simplest tasks, like use a saw or strimmer, but did have the advantage of being teflon coated.

Check this video out... It's one of my favourite tree videos. I don't know who the guy is, but his rigging is awesome at what seems to be a very great height. He seems methodical and exercises caution whilst working. He, to me, is clearly a good climber and has the same ability as any of the climbers in the spotlight.

It's not all about money though, is it Andy ? We'd all be investment bankers otherwise.

It's too easy in this job to get stuck in one mindset, bomb it out or go slow for the groundies etc. I get satisfaction from choosing the appropriate pace and killing it.

Its definitely about the money, I like climbing and kit, and they are my chosen means to an end but they are a means to an end

It's a fun vid, for sure, but there was a lot going on that seemed over complicated. Tip tying limbs 80' up and pulling them over? Could have been butt rigged. What was with the crab and Munter hitch with the climber controlling a piece?

Obviously I don't know the site, but it seems like someone was playing about!
