What are you burning

The burner has not been lit for a few weeks as winter if over for us, but last year was mainly Lawson, Macrocarpa, River She-Oak (Aussie hardwood).. The collection for next winter so far is mainly Cherry, as much Mac/Pine as I want, and small quantities of Ash, Olive (should be good), Cedar, Juniper, Silky Oak and all kinds of stuff!

 

I take small quantities of wood back home and split with an axe; if I've got a load/half a load I take it to my bro-in-laws farm where the splitter is. I seem to get mainly hardwoods from clients and softwoods from windblown trees on his farm, so we gonna do a bit of swapping. Definitely need both, just got to educate the missus on what bits are softwood, might have to put signs up in the woodshed!

throw a lump of hardwood at her then try some soft she will learn very quickly the differance i promiss:biggrin:

Mixture of Coal (swapped it for what was left in the oil tank when it got removed) wood briquettes (gathered up during leeds fest tidy up) and half rotten birch hat should have got burnt last winter.

 

Once that lot's gone it's mainly Ash and Syc this winter with a bit of Birch and a smattering of all sorts (inc robinia, leylandii and rowan)

99% softwood at home; I keep the hardwood for the great British public who prefer to pay more for stuff that's hard to light and heavy to handle, all in the belief (still) that conifer is absolute rubbish.

Mind you I wouldn't mind selling a bit more softwood.

 

My thoughts exactly.

 

Had a roaring fire going of softwood offcuts, goat willow and pine. Stuck a large bit of ash on there and now its just smouldering!

Oak joinery offcuts in the showroom, vast heat and massive flame displays in the 7940.

 

At home a mixture, mainly pine at present. Just loaded it up with a mix of Ash and pine, that will do it tonight.

I'm burning my way through a pile of larch. Hopefully get some more in the future, prefer it to hardwood even if it does burn a bit faster. Gets the temp up nice and fast and my burner seems to prefer it to hardwood.

Got some green laburnum any good when seasoned?

 

Laburnum burns very well.

Everything I wouldn't be proud to sell, I cut some special order long logs for a customer the other day. the chap sounded particular so anything under the correct length went in my log store, simples!

I'm getting rid of all my mixed crap at the moment while it aint that cold , leylandi , lime , rotten beech , willow and a pile of ash bark I found .

 

Keeping the good stuff for when the cold comes .

A pile of half-buried oak and beech that I split and then got moved when we had some building work done. Has a sort of mummified look but is dry as a bone. I have to ring and split a few piles of oak and ash which have been lying for two years but there's a huge pile of half-rotten alder I need to do something with - might as well burn it!
