As I sat outside my local pub the Elm Tree I sat staring down at my Stella.I just kept thinking that if I made it my last and left before midnight I was almost free from a life that had felt as if i had been a slave to alcohol which I had .....I looked at the time.It was 10.30 p.m. I took a final sip, left about half of it and walked away from the crowded smokey beer garden and walked the short distance up the cobbled street home.I went to my room and sat on my bed.My last thought was that I had wasted many years of my life and if I just went to sleep now before the stroke of midnight I would wake up in a year that I could start living as the old Paul. And I did.

So to answer your question Mr Bullman or at least in my experience. My last drop was over Four years ago.I just stopped.Without help.I dont miss it and am never tempted because in all honesty I never enjoyed it I was just a binge drinking alcoholic who was hooked and just needed to take control....I started to feel a real difference after about 90 days.Six months felt amazing and at one year I was a different person. And now I cant even remember what it feels like to even be "tiddly" and remember I was consuming 56 cans a week....Minimum.....for 20 years!!! I can honestly say other than my determination and positivity I am a completely different person...or rather I am the person I was always meant to be🙂

A couple of years later the Acid House scene started and then the rave scene and I said goodbye to drink and moved on to recreational delights up until 1996 when I discovered Arboriculture and I left the partying scene for good.Oddly enough those days were easy to say goodbye to and had no effect on my life in fact I rather enjoyed them.

About a year ago I started drinking a shot or 2 of brandy before bed time as I had heard from numerous old people it keeps colds away , and what with covid giving people coughs and myself for as long as i can remember suffering bad coughs with common colds ect I thought I would give Brandy a go... and I am now at the age if i drink beer before bed then i need a pee in the middle of the night.

Any way, after only weeks of being on the Brandy I noticed a significant improvement of my airways and sinuses ...All my life i have suffered runny noses in the morning which can make me cough and then give head aches...also related was an ear infection last January that lead to a CT scan which discovered my sinuses were blocked and stuff. A year of drinking Brandy or Whisky before bed has now seen at least 3 colds come and go without any bad cough and also had covid without a cough at all...I looked it up on-line and it would seem that some people do benefit from a little drink before bed. I spoke to my ENT specialist and he even said keep on drinking Brandy if it works for me, just do not drink too much.

If it's any consolation, Stella is 4.6% now.

Because I have a drink problem I do dry January each year to prove I’ve not. I love drinking, makes me feel relaxed and content but....
By February 1st have alway lost a stone and a half and feel great but then it’s back to normal.
I always get my annual blood pressure blood tests done then and they are reasonable. Completely cheating only myself as for the rest of the year I wouldn’t be surprised if they were dire. I’ve always failed to curb it, my last great white hope is that come retirement in august I will not feel the need and will limit it to sensible amounts. I’m really envious and respectful of those who can cut it out completely but it too much a part of my life. I wish it wasn’t
