I seem to have a slightly different view to many of you on the subject of staff talking to customers/ public. I have never employed idiots so would hope staff would be sensible but I always tell them that if anyone is rude to them they dont have to stand there and take it. I wouldn't take it and I dont expect them to. Obviously I dont encourage a slanging match in the middle of the street either. Dont get me wrong, i'm not arguementative by nature, infact ill pretty much get on with anyone, but draw the line when people are rude or obnoxious.

Ill always stand by my staff too, if the need arises.

I am just in the process of taking on an employee for the first time. He has worked with me for the last 12 mths, he got 30/31/32/34 and wood chipper, he has done the 39/39 but not had the assesment as yet. he works hard most of the time and is keen. sure he has bad points but deep down he is trying. sure im have to give him a kick up the ass sometimes but we were all 19 once. the one thing that pees me off is smoking. thinks he can spark up whenever he wants.

so i should only employ scottish lads? what if an english lad wants a job? if we are going to be small minded then we might aswell be REALLY small minded:sneaky2:

there is loads of work, might just not be what you want to do, but its still work.

and sawdust i wouldnt employ anyone who smoked simples. You are the boss, if you havent said to the lad then he cant know not to. And if it is the workplace then he shouldnt be.

I'm a non-smoker myself, but I think smoking is a very grey area in this type of work with regards to the regulations. At my work we're told not to smoke on site, but we work on council owned property in public areas, so where is 'on site'. Our guys are'nt even allowed to smoke when they're on open air ride on mowers.

I guess on private jobs it would be at the property owners discretion.
