My parents are victims of cowboy tree surgeons who are now blaming my mother.

it might be the letting agent that is the problem just wanting the cheapest way of dealing with it and blaming everyone else for the short fall and lack of knowledge

eco plugs will sort your side out but not the next doors new tree that has come up from suckers for the last 2 years

That tree belongs to next door, it is a self set/suckered cherry, it may be a offspring of your old tree but it’s growing the other side of the fence so is their tree. Who owns your house is not of any importance to their tree!

there is a chance that poisoning your stump could kill there tree if the root system is connected, this could be a good thing or could be damage to there property depending on opinion!

Your tree is gone.  This is now their tree.

Their tree is supporting a root system.

The roots of their tree now extends into your garden.

Be sure to complain to them if the roots cause you a nuisance.

You are casually stating with certainty, something which solicitors, barristers, and "expert witnesses" could line their pockets squabbling over for a few years, should the neighbours be vindictive enough and well-heeled enough (or stupid enough!) to decide to pursue.

The growth next door hasn't come from setting seed, it has come directly from the roots of the original tree which has spread over the boundary, and I reckon that is sufficient grounds to make the problem contestable.

Awkward or not, the neighbours need to be included in dealing with the problem.

An, "it's not our problem any more, you deal with it" approach could end up badly, and in my opinion, it's probably worth a bit of teeth gritting to avoid that possibility.

Thanks once again to all.

A final question. Now that our tree is dead and the neighbours have their own tree growing from the suckers our tree produced, can their tree 'take over' the root system? i.e Even though our tree is dead, its root system is still alive, but it has now been 'adopted' by the neighbour's tree for use?

Its just  asexual. clonal vegetative propagation its what some plants do.

Theres an aspen tree in the USA thats suppose to be the largest living plant on the world

In 10,000 yrs maybe you will have a massive cherry forest.

Just picked up on this thread.....better than a soap opera and similar to the Two Ronnies.....I need some "O"s....

It looks like this tree needs a bit if audience participation from both tenants or the landlord/agent to get off his arse, give the new growth a good dose of glyphosate and drill and plug the stump with a suitable kill and rot chemical or just glyphosate it.

An ideal time would be during a long and hot dry season when any tree is under a lot of stress but never mind.

I have learn't in life that bitching about something isn't going to do anything....get your landlord to get a suitably licensed gardener to spray all the new growth and plug the stump otherwise this will be a new thread about felling a tree in 15 years time!!!
