Day rates when things go wrong..

Eventho he's a tight arse, you shouldn't charge the customer for operator error or machines broken down, especially if it's a good customer who has fed you family over the years. Think of All the money you made with him, so what's 650+ a day? In addition, I guess there is not even the slightest chance if a lawyer would come into play, he'll whipe you off the table in a second.

surely getting it stuck and realizing it was stuck wasn’t more than an hour, could they not have done something on rope and harness? 
 

should still be 6-7 invoiceable hours. Machine recovery is unfortunately your problem

Interestingly, usually when ordering aggregates/concrete the invoice will say something like "lorries ordered to leave the public highway are at the customers own risk..... blah blah"

Ie if it gets stuck on your land you would be responsible for the recovery costs/downtime - fortunately I've not had to find out yet!

a lot of jobs on day rates will never go in your favour .Hourly rates can be better but never say it will be finished in x amount of time only roughly estimate  .also say if you estimate a job £1500-2000 and finished in good time client will also want to pay low end.then asking near the  end of the day if you can lop another tree included in deal which apparently only takes 10 minutes

The real arse with day rates in any trade is that to a customer an inexperienced worker looks awfully busy while someone on top of the job looks to be coasting 😕
