Pricing cock up

I'm getting better, but still drop a bollock just like this one now and again!

Usually when work is slackening off for some reason. Must be subconcious, because I always try and keep my prices up no matter what.

Least you got caught out on a decent looking job! Now if it had been a conifer hedge....

If I really screw up, and I mean really screw up, then after the 1st day I go to the client and I say "I've really screwed up the price, you can have this day on me and we walk away, or we can re price at £x" they always continue with the job.

That seems pretty unprofessional to do that after starting a job IMO.

I don't think it's unprofessional to do that as long as it is just now and again. We all make mistakes - I used to battle on with my teeth gritted thinking must get the job done regardless. Much more chance of having an accident that way.

Then I realised why? I give people quotes or estimates. 99% of the time the job will be done for that price and all is well. But now and again you can get it badly wrong. Talk to the customer. Explain the reason why the job is taking longer than anticipated and would it be possible to add a little more to the quote. Or just come to an arrangement that suits both parties.

I dunno.

You are giving them the option for you to walk away and it not cost them anything.

Havent had to do that yet but never know may be an option.

Jobs that havent gone to plan have always been completed with no mention of extra money.

I think people associate changing a quote halfway through a job as being unprofessional as that's what all the door knockers do as a way of ripping people off.

There's all sorts of other professions out there that alter their price if things work out longer than anticipated - builders, plumbers, electricians, mechanics etc .... Does that mean they're unprofessional?

To bring into context this is something I did 3 times in 8 years so I'm not saying this is a day to day occurance. But I think it's an option and I don't think it's unprofessional.

But maybe I'm alone in thinking this :blushing:
