End of day maintenance

Maintenance is part of the job. That is included in the price you give for a job. The last business I worked for before setting up my own, they were jokers with maintenance. Did nothing and looked like a bunch a cowboys. Pretty much every job we went to there were issues with the equipment, slowing the job down and frustrating the team. Why the fuck would you go to a job without razor sharp chains and saws that run efficiently. Even turning up to the first job in the morning and sharpening your chains just looks bad from a customers point of view. Thing is most outfits run like this and I think its a joke. I'm happy to take less money and put time aside to keep my equipment well looked after so it lasts.

7 saws in the truck. Sharpen em when their is time on the job or pick up another saw. You hit things on jobs so you should have time to sort them on jobs.

Got to say Really don't think this is the case.

The only time I a sharpen a saw in the yard, is if I'm cutting in the yard.

If a saw does need sharpening before we start, I find customers are generally fascinated by the process and IMO they see us as skilled when we can quickly sharpen a saw when needed.

 

As for changing chains, rather than sharpening, oh dear . When I take a chain off its done!

Gotta agree with skyhuck on this usually sharpen mine when i get to job and a coffee then start work

Sharpen a saw when it’s blunt... unless it’s the last cut off the stump and it’s been a long day and it can wait until tomorrow.

I never change the chain on the job, I just change the saw.

If saws need substantial maintenance I'll do them at home - otherwise I tend to "top up" sharpen all the time! Just like a butcher or a chef with their knives.

That's the Forestry way Sambo- I used to tickle the teeth every three or four fells on sitka / norways, could mean a tonne difference on yr weight at end of day. K
