End of day maintenance

Like most people I do try and clean and sharpen at the end of the day but sometimes just can’t be bothered, one thing I do I have a small scrub brush and every refuel I brush the caps off so many less visits to the shop to get the carb cleaned especially on my carving saws

Good tip that Mark, so is keeping the combi can spouts clean for the same reason.

 

I used to be pretty good for servicing after work, few cans, heater and tunes on, but I've slipped a bit these days. Always carry stump vice and all sharps kits in the toolbox in the truck.

More thorough maintenance seems to become more vital on Sundays if a trip to buy soft furnishings is mentioned.

I don’t clean saws , i have spare chains with me , try not to sharpen chains on site ( especially when minus 10 degrees ) .
I just do things when needed.

Lucky it's only 2-3 saws most days. A two man team, would do my head in if I had a few gangs of guys and loads of saws etc to sort, don't know if I could sleep at night ?

Sunday mornings it’s me, the dog and the radio in the workshop escaping the wife’s hoovering and cleaning, if we’re not in the house there’s no point shouting at us.

We try and put stuff away sharp every day, this usually happens. It's only after a long day where we are all wrecked that stuff gets put away blunt, but I try and book an easy day the day after such an outing so that we can either take other saws or spend half hour in the yard doing if before we set off. 

 

I find my rule of if you blunt it by hitting something then you sharpen it means far less knackered chains.

I try to refuel when back at yard at end of day, everything is always empty for some reason anyway, and clean the filters.
I seldom sharpen chains on the job, or at the end of day, I keep a load of spare sharp chains for everything in the truck at all times.
As above, sharpening done at weekends instead of following Mrs oldwoodcutter shuffling round Asda.

Refuelling at the end of the day sounds good practice, whether it’s a saw or a tractor etc, lessens the opportunity for condensation in tank and if you spill all over yourself, you’re goin home anyway!
