Most people, for one reason or another, couldnt climb to the level where your getting paid a decent wage.

Thats another story but as Deliabodge pointed out there is a shortage. Decent contract climbers can top £250 a day around here, non to shabby for a guy working out of the back of a car with £1,500 worth of clobber.

Plenty of people about who can climb with tickets but I find few who can climb really well and deal with everything competently and safely. Some of us who run our own firms, I include myself in this, are not prepared to let the new steady away/slow lad or lady climb as the job can't afford the time. So these newly ticketed people never get any better or profitable, this is something I've tried to change with my subbies and I now make myself let them do at least some climbing every time they work for me. After all as second climber they should be current and competent, got to see them climb to judge that!

It's an insult to climbers to suggest you could train anyone up to do it.

Any physically fit grafter could have a fair go at it, but there's not many get good at it, at least as an all-rounder.

In my prime I was alright.

In good weather.

On dismantles.

A fair few climbers out there are ok, but apart from the gun freelancers I use its quicker doing it myself.

Few are willing to serve the time at a lower wage.

Stevie, the only time I made £400/day as a contract climber was taking down some TPO Oaks in Kensington at night for some huge Russian Mafia bloke. And I had to let him and his bodyguards bum me afterwards.

not to stir up the old climbers wages debate but whats required of a climber? honesty, trustworthyness, clued in, physically fit, prepared to work their socks off every day, operate dangerous equipment (at dangerous heights)that can kill and maim, short career prospects, high risk of repetitive strain issues in later life etc. for as little as £80 a day. Hmmmmm sign me up:thumbup:

Certainly not £80 a day round here!
