Is this still possible to get done at Alice Holt? If not does anyone know other places that do this?

Not sure how thick or wide your slabs are. But, after air drying slabs down to 15 or 16%, I re-saw them into narrower and thinner sections before the final drying down to 8 to 10% suitable for use indoors with central heating. Dries quicker doing that, and less likely to develop defects such as splits, etc. I don’t have a kiln, but run a dehumidifier in the workshop and stack timber out of the way to slowly dry down to 8 to 10%. Years ago, I just used to keep the planks in the house and they gradually acclimatised before being machined to final sizes. But you might not want a stack of planks inside! Needs to dry slowly. I suspect with firewood logs the aim is to dry them as fast as possible and if they split it doesn’t matter. Andrew

Good morning Arbtalkers 😊

Thanks Shavey, lets see if L&S can get the smaller parts but it's good to know you've got a whole unit so I can get the saw up and running anyhow.

There's a lot of madness like that in the animal kingdom. Think of the life cycles of Eels or Salmon for instance. Or Newts hauling themselves out of nice cosy ponds to treck across fields and roads in the blind hope of finding another pond the same. Eels have crazy lifecycles. I thought they could travel a long way over ground, but this says thousands of miles. This map solves a century-old mystery about eels - Big Think BIGTHINK.COM For the first time ever, scientists were able to link eel migration to their presumed spawning grounds in the Sargasso Sea.

Removed a dead Beech. Quite interesting thinking of how to achieve it with a big enough safety margin. The tree was dead, Kretz, Ganoderma and HF around the base. With a sounding mallet it was apparent there was no sound wood in the base. We have a large drop zone, with collateral to the rhododendron underneath being accepted. Some stone gate pillars and a post and rail fence on the drip line of the canopy on one side. I was happy climbing the upper canopy the wood was clearly dry and dead, but big enough to take my weight. The unknown was regarding the base and the extent of decay/strength of the wood. Considerations were predominantly around knocking big bits and altering the weight bias of the tree without knowing what margins we had before the tree may fall. My final choice on how to deal with it were concluded by not wanting to be in the tree for any big cuts. So the plan was set a winch line for the eder 1800, and another to side line against the weight attached the a 3t digger. Set the cuts at 1/2 height bail out of the tree and let the winch do the work whilst everyone was safe a clear Incase the tree failed at the base. It still took a suprising pull the get it over, the hinge held for more the I anticipated. It worked just fine, I left a bigger hinge than normal as the wood was dry where I put the cuts in. Got out the tree and let the winch do the work. It landed in the right place as planned with minimal risk to anyone. VID-20250909-WA0028.mp4 The remaining lower stem I went back up, stripped the remaining branches and winched it over.

I though that too. Nonchalant about the seemingly near misses with the roof as well.

Bit like the old saying Mick, I will be there now in a minute 😆

Every time a householder kills himself doing tree work a hundred housewives read about it and stop their husbands with the words “no you are not! We’ll get a pro in and pay him whatever it costs” Its an ill wind…..etc.

There are people on here with way more knowledge than me about such matters, but from those pictures, I would have been firing up a saw immediately. They're some of the ugliest specimens I have seen, and at that size, I wouldn't have any qualms about removing them. When I worked for a builder friend, the building control officer in one area was absolutely petrified of Leylandii. If he saw one anywhere near, the footings had to be bigger/deeper. Once upon a time, a neighbour rang and asked me to fell the oak tree near his mother's house, as it had been deemed responsible for cracking/subsidence. I refused, and told him that the oak tree wasn't the culprit. He replied that he knew it was the big Willow, I knew it was the willow, but the insurance man said it was the oak, and it needed to be felled for the payout.

So add yourself to the tip sites, that is a good start if you haven't already. A couple of pointers: Great, yes am sure we can all tip there.. if we know where here is... We could of course give you a call... no we can't, email instead? err, cannot do that either.... But first off register as tip site. Note that most established firms will have somewhere to get rid of their waste sorted, most likely those that use tip sites are away from their home area and want somewhere local to tip to save an hour or 2 round trip.. so you won't get a call every week. Be flexible with what you can take. Split and dried logs tipped are never going to happen but 25kg lumps of wood are more likely if you can cut, split and dry them yourself (assuming this is for firewood)

Yup I do that too. I use alkalyte aswell for the infrequently used bits of kit. So I calculate the amount to take it from 50:1 to 40:1. However I'm moving back to Apsen because the cans pour better than motomix and I'm too tight to buy their special funnel.
