  1. Past hour
  2. After taking excellent advice on here regarding what to replace an 038 with, I bought a 400, and was over the moon with it. Still am. In fact, I was so pleased with it, that I bought it's cousin, the 261 to replace an accursed 251, which was just a huge disappointment after an 023, which died at over 25 years. I love the 261 even more than the 400, and you'd think I'd be over the moon with two lovely saws. Problem is, I bought them the wrong way round. If I'd bought the 261 first, the 400 would have been a 462, cos the 261 is just so lovely to handle, and so capable and eager. It's oh so close to a 400, perhaps due to the lighter chain, I don't know.
  3. I’d be going for the Hinowa , firstly for the reach ( especially the outreach) and that Hinowa would be more popular ( over here anyway, not sure about UK) with more technical back-up within a reasonable distance.
  4. Today
  5. Slight derail but since you have a machine there and your camera out, can you point at what you need to open up to inspect the blades and anvil on one of those. A hire shop near me has one, it's the sort of thing I might want to hire one day and they're the sort of people to try to give it to me blunt.
  6. That's something we're considering. We've got a small family apple tree planted on the perimeter of the garden which is doing just fine. Feels like a cherry tree is not the best thing to plant... I'm afraid developers only do the bare minimum, so no drainage whatsoever. Our garden backs onto an area with vegetation and a small brook running at a lower level. The ideal thing would be to drain into this area.
  7. Still think you should get a refund, far more time taken ,no usable product, have to buy in chip. Lay it on thick
  8. The rootstocks had been in the ground for 7-8 years and were too big to use. They were about as thick as my wrist at their base, straight stemmed and about 12" tall. I cut them off with a chainsaw at ground level, that is what I was chipping. Clean, no soil, no roots, rubbish, weeds or anything else. It was ideal conditions and ideal material for the job. I had done some previously using my sons small petrol engine chipper and that chipped them fine (he used that one not me). My plan is that where they were cut off they will sprout again and I can use that fresh growth to produce rootstocks and at the same time the landlords don't think I have planted a forest.
  9. Hey folks! just wondering if anyone has been over to the Netherlands or Belgium for Arb work? often wondered what the work is like and working over there! any advice is welcome.. cheers,
  10. Were you poking rootstock through a chipper? Bob
  11. A lot of the first members here came from the Treehouse, myself included

  13. I should probably add that it cost £240 + VAT delivered and was delivered within an hour of me calling. It is a pity it was in such crap condition as I could have got loads more done but at the end of the day I did do what I wanted. Biggest downside is the chip is crap and not really any use to me, decent chip would have been. The rootstocks were in a rented field and they needed clearing, it is a weight off my mind that it got done.
  14. Stick to the UK version Doug a man should know his limitations. 😉

You might struggle to find one though!

  18. IMO no you don’t every picker I’ve used has always just run out of reach at some point
  19. Blunt? Not evan close, you could ride bare arse to London on that and not cut yourself!
  20. All that has been sorted I have purchased a dedicated mewp trailer that will accomodate the heaviest machine and keep it under 3.5 ton. The real question is do you sacrifice 2 meters in height and near 2 meters in reach for a drop of 500 kgs???

  22. Another consideration might be a tree that enjoys water after doing all the ground works - keeping in mind the end size of the tree, and the proximity to the house - a small willow or something? I don't suppose the developers put in any drainage for the garden did they - somewhere to join any you add into
  23. Obviously take plenty more pictures, if I were forst I certainly wouldn't be happy with people renting a machine in that garbage condition. It's hardly an advert for encouraging sales, whilst I know they take a beating on a hire fleet. It's should atleast go out the door with a bit of bite and not have wire wrapped around the drive shaft.
  24. Those main bearings must have taken a right pasting
  25. We are an allotment site, part of Horfield and District Alloment Association. The site is open and accessible by a vehicle gate from Cairns Road. There are two areas for chippings - one as you come into the allotment site and one at the far end. Free access so no need to prearrange delivery. There is usually a sign on the gate stating if we need chippings or are full.
  26. Sometimes ( I don't know if its the case for the OP ) but if you are working near a water course or on a sssi they stipulate non mineral or synthetic oil . Only veg .
