If you use the stepped tap it will start following any vestige of original thread, the cutting bit of the step will ream out a hole which is the inner diameter of the helicoil's thread, the tap above the step will then form the new thread. If you use just a single helicoil tap you will need to drill first, this is where mistakes happen. The helicoil is just like the one way clutch you can make with a pencil and a spring of a slightly smaller diameter on it. You can wind it in because you are drivng in by the tang and, as you say the torque causes the spring to wind up and shrink its diameter slightly. Try and unscrew it and it attempts to unwind and jams against the thread, this is why it doesn't extract itself when you take a plug out. it's also why it is most important that the helicoil is short enough to sit totally withing the length of thread. Having a piece of helicoil sticking out of either end of the threaded hole is a disaster. I have never had one jump a pitch when inserting.

I have the split shaft and long reach attachement. Its just as capable as the Stihl petrol. Most people that have tried mine hate it as it turns off too fast, if you let go of the switch, but a peice of tape solves that issue. I've got used to it so no need for the tape. I did complain to Makita as its bloody retarded when the hedger stays on for minutes. I cant stand the noise of a petrol hedger! The split shaft can also be used with brush cutter/trimmer string but on thick bramble, it does eat battery fast. It will do it, but best to have a few batteries and one on charge. If I had more thick waist high bramble I would instead take my 52cc chinese trimmer - thats also a very good cheap option if your not a professional, £120 for a 5 in one machine. Nope get the better system and sell the old, or keep both. The new chargers can do the old batteries with a £5 adaptor.

Its an existing square drilled hole, the tap will want to follow it square and unless your cack handed it wont be a problem. Now if you've never used a helicoil before I have an important tip - release the pressure on the insertion tool every half turn and go slow. The wire is like a spring. If you instead, wind it in continuously or fast, the wire will wind up smaller than the thread, when that happens it will jump, and then you have a problem! You do not want a helicoil wire to jump out of the thread. If it does on a chainsaw engine, your best to try winding it all the way through and hope the unsupported tang doesnt snap off early, start again with a fresh one. Its also wise to drill and tap a hole in some scrap to practise with first.

That'd stop even the most committed idiot buying one. @Rob D aka chainsawbars does a 42" Sugi Hara. Not a big enough step up from a 36" to me. Does a 48" 3/8 1.3 GB milling bar though.

Have you tried this bit of the site? https://arbtalk.co.uk/recycling/ I wouldn't recommend woodchip to get rid of weeds though. Not in the long term at least. They'll work for a couple years, if in a sufficiently thick layer, but as soon as they start to rot and breakdown they'll just form fertile new soil for weeds to grow in. Better to use an inorganic mulch like chippings or slate. Or just accept that there'll always be weeds and remove them as and when they get too much, and certainly before they set seed.

Just to iterate getting the tap in dead square is crucial.

You've not said what it's off, I'm guessing a top handle saw as they tend to just get sharpened in situ.

Lad I knew did that 10 yrs ago cut his thumb off, tried to sew it back on not successful though, now got half a thumb, was a proper job. Used to use felco battery ones in the late 90's just when they came out, doing a couple of thousand orchard trees each year.

Care needed but you can helicoil them without stripping the engine but care with where the piston is, grease and stuffing the cylinder is all part of it as is using the compressor airline with the exhaust port only slightly open is all important.

If you’re doing a lot of flail work get a tractor much quicker

Does anyone on here run a eurocomach/case/new Holland machine, specifically with a flail? I’m pricing a 2.7 ton with the continuous flow option as I intend it to do a lot of flailing. And some grab work. Just after people’s opinions on them as there aren’t many about. Also I’ve requested a standard arm rather than long arm due to stack height with a grab and rotator. Now I’m thinking I should get a long arm as I’ll get more reach to with the flail. Will the long arm make much difference in my lifting capacity or am I overthinking it? Thanks
