    I'd always turn it down. It's done my way or not at all. If a client didn't respect my opinion enough to listen to it, they can be someone else's client.

    Well that just about sums up this forum doesn't it. I asked a perfectly reasonable question related to what was being discussed at the time, and was told to answer would derail the thread. Then people see an opportunity to have a dig at someone and suddenly it's back to 'no holds barred'.

    I think I may regret asking this, but is a ported saw not actually ported in the traditional sense? Those of us who wasted our youth messing about with cars would think of porting in terms of a 'flowed and ported' or 'ported and polished' head. Is that not the case with a 'ported' saw?

    As a rough guide, if you are an individual you get some consumer protection. A contract contrary to your statutory rights won't stand up. If you are signing on behalf of a ltd co (a separate legal entity in its own right) caveat emptor applies. The waters are slightly less clear around sole traders as they are essentially individuals purchasing for business purposes. As stated above, we'd need to see the contract. Edit. It would also be useful to know how it was paid for. There are certain protections that come with using a credit card for example (above and beyond the ones people tend to know about).

    It gets complicated with businesses. Technically, if you are buying it as a business, you aren't a consumer so consumer rights don't apply (although some times they do). We'd need to see the contract to know if it would stand up.

    Surely too much oil is as bad as too little as then you are burning too lean a mixture?

    Completely agree. If it will take a cut without churning it up, get it done. For all we know it could rain for a month at any time and then it will be a jungle when we do our first cut.

    I suppose my point really is that you shouldn't worry what the current going rate is, but that makes the whole thread a bit pointless doesn't it.

    You need to stop thinking of our services as a commodity; that's just a race to the bottom. Think of yourself as a luxury that people look forward to spending money on and build a business around that assumption.

    If I'm in someone's garden they are paying my minimum hourly rate regardless of what I'm doing. If they want the gardening bits done cheaper, it won't be me who's doing it.
