  1. You just know it's going to be a pain in the backside. I've got one now, the National trust say it's 'Highways' responsibility, and 'Highways' tell me it's the National Trusts responsibility. The customer told me that the forestry commission own it.
  2. I do hope we can still get Aspen post apocalypse. I really don't want to be fighting zombies with crappy old pump fuel.
  3. A website for a business like this will cost peanuts; It's daft not to have one. It's a bit of a misconception that most marketing is done via social media these days. A marketing mix is about strategic decisions, not what promotional channels you are going to use, and that's where you need to start.
  4. Surely we'd be expected to dispatch humans with saws, not guns.
  5. If that wasnt a typo this thread is heading into a dark place.
  6. Or 357 xp if you can find a good one.
  7. I have a 261 and a 550 xp MK 2. I prefer the husky but they are both good saws. The Husky seems more powerful because it's a bit of a screamer; having said that, the Stihl feels more torquey and is less likely to bog down in the cut.
  8. You should tell Collins. You have to read down the link a bit. The Longest Word in the Collins English Dictionary - Collins Dictionary Language Blog BLOG.COLLINSDICTIONARY.COM The longest word listed in Collins English Dictionary is dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, which is the full name of the...
  9. No, you are right, I'm not sure about proper nouns. I remember learning that the longest strings of consonants were 6 in any English words, but that would just be dictionary words I would think.
  10. You can't have more than 6 in a row, in English.
  11. At least if it does need work they can power the chipper from the PTO on the tree.
  12. Maybe not quite what you meant but might be useful nonetheless. If the wood chip is destined for use as a garden mulch it needs to be at least 1 year old. If it's fresh it sucks nitrogen out of the soil apparently. It's never going to take out more than it puts back though is it, which makes it a bit of a non-issue.
  13. All I could think when looking through it was 'how much did that lot cost when it was new?'
  14. Anyone with a chainsaw mill would do it in the time it would take to put 4 fenceposts in the ground far enough to achieve what you want, and it would look a lot better.
  15. Get someone to mill a flat bottom on it.
  16. Op, you are going to need to explain why you need to secure them to the floor. Large heavy pieces of wood are pretty keen on staying on the floor anyway.
  17. Seems like such a long time ago now. I think I was trained by John Trenchard and then you assessed me. The training could have been by a little bloke (Mark?). It's been such a long time all the units seem to blend into one.
  18. Haha. You must be getting on a bit. I remember when you assessed me on one of my units in about 2001 - 2002 ish at Sparsholt.
  19. There we go then; if PUWER doesn't allow modified equipment, we have our answer. You shouldn't be using a ported saw for work. Having said that, we seem to have also concluded that HSE inspectors are a bunch of monkeys who wouldn't know a 200t from a bag or potatoes.
  20. That is a good point. You won't get anyone from the HSE who knows his backside from his elbow. You'd have to rely on the possibly injured employee not to mention it though.
  21. I'm not saying they aren't a good idea from that point of view; I'm simply saying you are opening yourself up to (the possibility of) a world of agro if you use one for business purposes. Imagine an employee has a hearing test and is found to have some damage. We buy PPE based on the risks that we know about. Ear defenders are designed to take the sound from a stock saw (limited for safety reasons) and reduce it to a safer level. Try telling your insurance company that you deliberately had a mod done that made the saw louder than the set limits and see what they say. I'm just thinking about this from a business point of view, I'm not saying that ported saws aren't better than normal saws, or that Spud is doing anything wrong.
  22. I'm not asking you to defend anything, I just asked a question to which I didn't know the answer. Having said that, the more I think about it, the more obvious it is that it's a bad idea ( to use a modified saw for work).
  23. Thanks, that's interesting. I agree, letting employees use a modified saw is asking for trouble. It's one thing a saw unintentionally being a bit more dangerous than stock, but to intentionally make modifications to make it more of a risk to use would be bloody difficult to defend in court. Equally, making a saw louder than standard has health and safety implications too.
  24. I honestly don't know if it's a good question or not. I'd imagine your insurance company would bend you over as well if they found out a modified saw was involved in an accident (once the HSE had a go). Edit. Anyone know enough about PUWER to know if it's relevant?
  25. Is there an issue letting employees use modified saws? If there was a kickback or trousers not stopping the chain quick enough related injury, I'm thinking the HSE would be all over the fact that the saw had been modified to make it more powerful than the manufacturer intended.
