  1. I do milling lessons if you’re near West Yorkshire?[emoji106]
  2. I’m writing a guide to chainsaw milling, which would answer all your above questions. But it’ll be about 18-24 months if it goes smoothly??? “Chainsaw lumber making” by will maloff is a good but dated book. In the meantime if you have any more specific questions, there are many experienced millers on here who might be able to help you with advice? [emoji106]
  3. Found hundreds of larvae whilst splitting oak firewood. Big bugger maggoty things like yer middle finger. They eat the healthy trees too, that’s the problem. Then it’s secondary infections on top. I’ve seen kilometres of hedges where every few metres there’s an oak covered in holes(hundreds). Beetles make a screaming noise if you prod them with a stick, (before putting your boot on top). [emoji20]
  4. Thanks for the education AB, In Brittany it’s a major problem as you can’t export the wood. Cut up a 5’ dbh oak once, it was like Swiss cheese inside. [emoji106]
  5. They are little bastards! They lay eggs under the bark of oak trees. The larvae eat the tree heartwood for 7-8 years before emerging as the beetle you photographed to breed. I’ve seen thousands and thousands of dying and dead oaks in France covered in exit holes. If a single one is found in a container of imported oak, customs will burn the whole shipment. Kill them on sight!!!!! Not a joke. [emoji106]
  6. Erm... an 880. Using up to 10 litres a day. When your face is 12”-18” off that exhaust, pump petrol is really really nasty. [emoji106]
  7. That last photo is a European longhorn beetle! Kill it!!!
  8. Spend a month using alkylate then try going back to pump fuel. Makes me feel sick now.
  9. Kin eck Andy that’s a nice piece!!!! [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
  10. Heretic!!! For a 1” thick steak (ribeye is good) Get a cast iron pan, 30ml of veg oil Heated to smoking hot. 2 mins each side no touching/moving Then remove from heat Leave 1 minute Add a large knob of butter Pour buttery juices over chips. [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
  11. Stihl motomix It’s alkylate petrol with stihl ultra. Get it in 55 litre drums and you can lift them. [emoji106]
  12. It’s rot, turpin phenol reaction thing. [emoji106]
  13. I’m no expert in diseases and pests. But from experience that tree is done. If it failed there might be severe consequences. How about replanting with a die back resistant ash? [emoji106]
  14. Think you should have a chat with Rob mate[emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
  15. I think you’re missing a trick here @big beech, If you had a single rail and robD’s Vertical/horizontal cut jobby. It would work like a Lucas mill! Small slabs or easy dimensional timber/beams.
  16. I’m guessing beer night? [emoji106]
  17. I bought the husky can first because it’s half the price of a stihl one. Leaked everywhere after 3 months. Now I’ve got 4 stihl combi cans and 2 sets of spouts. Found the spouts last about 3-4 years before going pop.
  18. Yeah a heck of a lot! I run the 60” and 80” regularly. Have you looked at Chainsawbars videos on YouTube? [emoji106]
  19. Today I spent a fantastic day with fellow arbtalker@forest2furniture, milling spalted sycamore, burred sweet chestnut and...... The legendary... Highly valuable black walnut!!!! Thanks Patrick [emoji106][emoji106][emoji106]
  20. Just get a panther mill, they really are that good. [emoji106]
  21. Bin the chain bar and sprocket. Get new ones which fit. [emoji106]
  22. Get a standard stihl combi can and both spouts. Not cheap but will work fir years. [emoji106]
  23. Hornets love ash trees and frequently nest in them. In France you get the fire brigade in to deal with them. They cut a 3’ hole in a large oak at my parents about 15 years ago and removed a 4’ nest. We had a nest in our barn, Just before we moved back to the uk. It was the size of a roll of roof insulation with long arms coming off to secure it amongst the rafters. Looked like something out of the Alien film. [emoji51][emoji51][emoji51]
