  1. Follow your dreams, eh?
  2. You don’t think the queue to get in a nice warm comfy seat is a mile long? I suspect you’ll be at the end if a very long pecking order.
  3. You’re a Joiner though?
  4. If you’ve a bigger picture in mind, ie the a forwarder and the cash set aside to start a business like that up then why not? You should maybe ask around to see if there is a demand for another player in the game before committing. I’d be asking myself why have those who have been in that game for years not already filled that gap in the market? Maybe because they’re slogging their guts out for minimum wage? 🤣
  5. I guess “Engineer” has such a huge scope and and as such such a varying salary and perks. When I was in the office it was pension, car, private health cover and a whole raft of other incentives. Hated the office though. Have you asked around to see what you’d be on per day/hour? Might be worth checking. If you’re having to fork out for your own PPE, tools and equipment you’ll have to cover the cost and maintenance time after work off of the days wage. When you hear about climbers on £150 a day it blows my mind. What’s a cutter gonna be on?
  6. What kind of Engineer are you? Qualified or just an Engineering type role? I’ll get slated here for this POV but I honestly can’t see the upside of giving up what could well be a well paid and skilled job with what most likely has a good private pension and potentially other perks such as private health care and a car to take up a job that pays little better than minimum wage.
  7. It’s not Trailer Competence anymore, I know that much. [emoji23]
  8. Not now ya don’t. 😂😂😂
  9. They don’t work in an industry either.
  10. You don’t work in an industry, you don’t produce anything. Unless you count paper pushing.
  11. No, just clarifying. If it’s bad pointing then you’re saying the smokes exiting the lady’s liner then re-entering the ops chimney via bad pointing and some how traveling all the way down the ops chimney?
  12. My old man was a climber. Supposedly quite a good one and always in demand. But we’re talking about “chainsaw operators” here though.
  13. They both have stoves professionally installed with Liners. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ How would you explain the smell of smoke?
  14. Learn on the job seems to be in the way out. At least here in Scotland. All have at least Collage time built into their “modern” apprenticeship. But before this you still had to be “time served”. That’s normally a four year apprenticeship then you get recognised papers.
  15. I know you’ve not lit your Stove this season. I can read. My comment stands. The lady firing up her Stove could be warming up your previously used liner causing your old soot/tar you’ve produced yourself to release volatiles that due to being fairly cold to sink back into your room. In my opinion if you don’t like the smell of wood burning you might want to consider installing an Electric look-alike Stove.
  16. The big difference is real trades have apprenticeships and recognised qualifications that need Uni or at least collage time. You’re not gonna get a job as a Sparkie or a Plumber unless you’re time served. Anyone with a Saw can get into Arb. Do a few weeks courses and you’re suddenly qualified. As such there will always be a surplus of blokes kicking about wanting work. Supply and demand. There seems to be way more supply than there is demand. Keeps the rates at near enough minimum wage for most.
  17. Her Stoves heating your Liner and as yours is still fairly cold your own wood smoke is falling back out your stove? If your Stove is fully lined try stuffing some Rockwool or some rags up your liner and see if that stops the smells.
  18. I think you could well be right! This is the kind of Oak I’ll be using.
  19. Thanks for the tips. Straight edges are not an issue for me since I have my Bandsaw dialed in quite well. If I go down the 4 sided planner route after drying Id assume that would take care of any small deviations? I think the logistics of repeatedly turning a 5.5-5.9m long 32" Oak Log will be a right PITA though. Thats whats putting me off the most. But Ive two 7m long logs and it seems a shame not to make full use of them. Ive a couple of 4m logs I could also use I suppose? I like the idea of a lose tongue for the ends. Good thinking. Any pictures of your flooring?
  20. Was thinking 18 feet/5.5m as thats the length of my living room. If 25mm works best then Id be happy with that. They'll be on 28mm of White wood flooring anyway. My uneducated view was the thicker the better and more stable, but thats clearly not the case. Thanks for the link, I'll look at that now. Looks like glue it is. 8" will be the maximum I'll go I think? Its a 5.5m run not 8. Will allow me to maximize my logs. Ive spoke with my local Joinery Company today and they say they can run 5.5m lengths quite happily through their 4 sided planner and then through they're rather large Spinal Moulder. They make their own flooring so Im happy they'll do a good job if it comes to it. Id rather do all the work myself though.
  21. I like your thinking but cant see that working for me. The room is in constant use. Thanks though.
  22. Regardless our views on hydrocarbons we all need them in our daily lives. This is not going to change in our lifetimes. No amount of hypocritical posturing at COPs will change this. To have such a massive power house of a company, a Dutch Company not only leave Holland but the EU is almost unbelievable. I’m actually quite gobsmacked. They could have followed the lead of other O&G corporations and sent up in the Middle or Far East with Singapore being a favourite. But they never, they have moved across the channel to the U.K. This shows not only Shells disillusion and distrust in the EU and how strong they view the U.K. post Brexit. And perhaps the Executives fancy a wee blue passport.
  23. I was being factious.
  24. Got a nice blue passport on the way.
