The fiskars one is no more expensive than a boy standard ‘slasher’ around here at £50 ish.

Insulated shipping containers are easy enough to come by. Might want lining in the inside with aluminium sheeting perhaps but add a heat source and ventilation and you’ll be laughing.

I have to agree with the 400 being a fantastic machine. It is easy to use, fast and produces great firewood. We have had a few problems though, I guess that’s what you get with a second hand machine. Had to replace a few major parts but it runs like a good’n 99% of the time. I wouldn’t go for anything else with a chainsaw personally. Welcome to come have a go of ours Matt? The real question is chainsaw or circular saw. Changing chains and stuff can become tiresome when you just want to get on sometimes I have to say but if you start with a sharp chain and well dressed bar every day you’ll get a plenty done before you even notice any difference. I do really like the look of the uniforest Titan 40/20 though. It’s about the same price as the tajfun 480 too and circular saw machine. If we change machine in the new year it’ll be a serous consideration.

Everyone I know in forestry call it Roundwood or just plain old firewood up here in the north east or Chip wood for softwood lengths that aren’t saw log quality.

Can you not decant logs from a solid vessel so you can quote by a definite volume rather than per bag. Doesn’t matter if they’re stretched then.

First time I’ve had a good 8 hours at it in a day for a while. Near constant chain troubles to start with and a friend operating for the first time so I can keep cages moved and logs coming yet still managed a respectable 2 cube an hour on average 6” diameter!

Plenty of sellers out there selling kiln dry logs that are more than slightly damp! Like ever garage forecourt in the country for a start.

How quickly do super dry logs take up moisture?

None of our stock ever hangs about long enough to do this test! Will have to hold a few logs of different species back as an experiment. Just to say when we kiln dry I rarely check moisture. The kiln runs until no more moisture is leaving the logs (confirmed via humidity in the kiln) so our logs are as dry as they can ever be. When we force dried without any humidity control we couldn’t get the logs fully dry in the centre (case hardening occurred) By holding the logs at high RH for the first few days we ensure the whole log is dry. Neither of my meters give any reading at all the logs are so dry. I assume it’s in the region of 15-18% even for the larger logs. -
Figure out how long it takes you to stack them per bag with say a 10m walk to store then charge by the percentage of the hour.

The extra time it takes the load the kiln alone requires more return than seasoned so it’s a good job I can charge more. Our boiler uses nearly all of our tier 1 payments just heating the houses and log sheds. The kiln tends to use the remainder and then push us into tier 2 payments which only cover the fuel cost as we buy wood in the round then chip. If we bought it ready chipped it’d cost quite a bit more. Round here those supplying both seasoned and kiln are generally £15 a loose cube more for kiln dry.

Depends on the size of the boiler. It’s use is irrelevant in terms of payment amount.

May not be the case on newer models but the older one I hired was gutless with the petrol engine. Totally different machine off PTO. It’s versatile machine though I can’t argue with that

480 is £17950 add £4000 for the plus model. 400 is still around £12000 I believe. New bigger log loader is £2500 Smallest live log deck is £4950 4m trailer one £8000odd (Not a dealer) just had a quote to upgrade ours [emoji851]

Can’t help but agree, for the money I couldn’t find a better machine if you already have a big enough tractor. Ours might be up for sale in spring if you’re in no rush. The wp36 take some beating if you want a towable machine but needed to be on PTO anyway to get the most from it in my opinion.

After watching the video I’d put my money on it being a fuse issue. Ours did a similar thing but with the saw.

Firstly check the fuses in the main switch box behind the panel underneath the joystick. Has caused us issues in the past and odd problems at that. Not logical ones. Then If you take the other panel off over the oil cooler and work the joystick you should see the lights coming on and off for each operation. Make sure the relevant ones light up to rule out issues there. Have you checked the cylinder and sensor below the joystick that tells the solenoid that the splitter ram has finished its cycle etc? There’s a spring in there that can snap and also check the little yellow light comes on on the sensor.
