  1. The reason why EV's are being promoted is in regards energy conservation. You're right, oil wont be cheap forever.. putting aside tax on fuel which by the way will be inched down in the next decade not increased.. The reason is every year we discover less and less new oil fields... its all about conserving what oil we know we have, and how long we can expect that oil to last.. the most cost effective way to stretch out the oil we have, is to conserve it. one way is in the form of EV's.. So, expect EV's to take off exponentially in the next decade.. but, don't expect battery power to become more efficient.. it'll be cars for round towns and trains for the longer journeys, unless you fancy joining a que a mile long to recharge somewhere in the middle of nowhere.. Just as an aside, Why HS2?.. because its gonna be needed for the extra traffic projected to be used by people using public transport..
  2. They've discovered ?.. in theory they might have have discovered something but putting that to a practical application might be something of a challenge.
  3. Has it crossed your mind why a car manufacturer might want to go from petroleum to battery power?.. after all, petrol cars are much more efficient.. One kilo of petrol will get you a good way, a kilo of batteries might just about get the car off the drive... I can see the utility of battery power to store hydro or other renewable power sources but cars?... waste of time if your asking me..
  4. I think the point the fella was making was a cost benefits analysis.. why invest in exotic materials when we already have cheaper options to hand... I haven't a clue about Nissan or their batteries, perhaps I might see if I can find out what their game is.. could just be a gimmick as far as I know. wouldn't be the first time manufacturers sell on peoples perceptions.. If customers imagine its a graphene battery perhaps they imagine it might be better.. who knows.. perhaps they've got better miles per charge because they've lowered the weight of the car?.
  5. so much for graphene
  6. making batteries safer is one thing, making em better suggests making em pack more power into an ever smaller area... ie Samsung Apple So theres two problems to solve, to make em more efficient as well as safer.. packing in more energy into and ever more dense area still gets you into the problems of thermodynamics.. to whit, the more you pack in, the greater the instability.. So, Apple may get a battery that stores more energy, but that comes with greater instability. instead of a third degree burn you might end up with a missing leg... somehow I think Apple don't want that sort of publicity.. I suppose they could increase the size of the battery to get round the storage problems, but then it sort of defeats the concept of smaller and better.. I think apple and Samsung are in a conundrum... round peg square hole..
  7. I'll tell you what I'll do, I'll look into the current state of affairs in regards battery development, the pro's and con's of the different types and get back..
  8. hahah its not what they say but what they don't say, did this research reveal anything else that might be of interest, like did it store more power into the same density or not?.. after all thats what we're working on isn't it?.
  9. Its not about opinions, its about the laws of nature.. you can only ever get so much energy into a battery before it becomes unstable.. Theres no opinions about it.. its a fact... Here you go one of Mrt Musks projects being debunked by Thunderfoot..
  10. Progress is made by discovering what can be done, not wasting time on things that can't be done.. The the harder you stuff energy into a denser area, the more unstable that energy becomes.. take a look at the sun.. see what happens if you follow the natural laws of thermodynamics... Batteries are no different...
  11. I don't know much about the Australia thing, no doubt Mr Musk built his superbattery by simply stacking one battery atop the other, much as he does in his cars... he hasn't actually installed some new battery or invented something new or exotic. And, I don't need no stinking TV licence, I have the worlds largest online library at my fingertips..
  12. I'm sure Elon Musk has watched Thunderfoots vids as well.. he knows what he's talking about.. And no, its not backwards thinking to think we've hit a brick wall in battery development.. Thunderfoot based his rejection of these superpower batteries on the laws of thermodynamics... not as gut feeling you seem to do..
  13. I doubt you watched or understand what thunderfoot was getting at.. Batteries are stored energy, the greater the storage the greater the danger if they malfunction.. currently a battery in a mobile phone might release that energy in the form of a flaming torch.. as they have done... video footage can be seen in the vid.. Increase the density of the energy in said battery and the greater the danger if they breakdown.. its simple, batteries are a compromise between density of stored energy and how dangerous they might become if they malfunction.. As to Elon Musk, he's something of an idiot in regards the things he plows his money in. Thunderfoot has debunked a few projects of his.. Musk is a dreamer who for the most part is an idiot.. an idiot with money to burn mind. He might be able to make a big battery, it never has been hard, what he doesn't seem to appreciate is the bigger the battery, the bigger the fire, the greater the danger to those around said battery if they explode in flames..
  14. Buy a welder an do it yourself. once you have a welder you can fix other things besides..
  15. I think you missed the part were I said, "if I'm interested in a subject".. I'm not really interested in the budget, or wasn't till I thought I'd point out an interesting observation.. as far as I'm concerned the Chancellor has his hands tied behind his back due to our national debt and for the next few years will be tweaking a budget as much as he can and not spending money like its going out of fashion.. so basically any budget is gonna be pretty boring.. As to wasting time researching a subject and finding you might as well as not bothered, well its better to engage the brain investigating a subject than watching the telly.. not to mention I enjoy investigating subjects, its sort like detective work.. thus, it is never a waste of time.. speaking of wasting time, I watched a good vid on utube last night, sort of came up in my recommendations.. about some scientists who think they might of made some breakthrough in battery power.. holds ten times the charge, be able to drive for longer, far'er and an all that. Well I subscribe to a utuber who's also a nuclear scientist.. he does a lot of debunking vids.. anyways, he put up a vid explaining that we're at the limits of battery technology and he doesn't think we can get much further that were we're at.. which by the way is were I'd already settled(due to research).. Anyways some fascinating footage of phones exploding and explanations as why battery power can be dangerous.. and how and why we're at the limits of battery power usage.. you should watch it, you might learn something... it might seem like a waste of time learning about these things, but one day, that knowledge might come in useful..
  16. To be honest the budget was sort of underwhelming, I didn't find anything to get exited about.. I read online about a joke Phil had made in regards Jeremy Clarkson, so searched it out this morning.. even that turned out to be poorly delivered but the MP's had a good giggle so it sort of worked.. Not worth spending quarter of hr this morning tryin the find the damned thing though..
  17. Three billion to prepare for Brexit.. Boris is costing this country more than he's ever gonna be worth.. he should be ashamed of himself.. he's gonna cost us 500 million as it is, after his gaff about the woman in an Iranian jail, he wants to get her out by paying the Iranians the money we owe them.. Only we can't legally do that so were gonna have to pay with our tax money to get that scambag out of a pickle... Other than my rant about Doris, the only thing thats got on my goat is getting rid of stamp duty... I've always wanted stamp duty to act as a brake on an overheating housing market.. raise and lower it as the situation demands.. Seems to me to be another sop to the morons in the Tory Party... scum of the earth the lot of em.. well, there's one or two I sort of like.. I might have more to say when some details come in regarding the small.print..
  18. The things we do to get a better purchase...
  19. I'll second that...
  20. Hahaha Thanks WesD... I'll get on watchinm that right now...
  21. Well this has been a marvelous read, I've enjoyed getting through this thread.. didn't think I had anything to offer in regards cock ups but one of the posts prompted a recollection from some years back... Nothin major, but its there.. Some years back a customer of mine, garden run. asked me to chop two tree's down in her back garden.. I went up a month or two later to do the job but she wasn't in, I looked at the three tree's, tried to remember which ones she wanted cutting down.. was it that one or the other one over there?.. Well, she's got two of them so she must of wanted one of em gone... took me most the day to chop em down and tidy up, I'd just about tidied up the last bit of crap and was stood admiring my days handywork, and contemplating my days wages when I turned round to find the owner and her husband standing behind me, tears streaming down her face... I'd chopped her favorite tree down, the one she wanted to keep....
  22. Errr cant watch Iplayer.. The spies at the BBC will be onto me and want some money for a licence. After fifty or so letters from them I eventually persuaded them that I only watch Utube these days, which is true.. I don't have a telly anymore.. but you still need a licence to watch BBC Iplayer.. I'm not paying to watch that...
  23. Quite right to Matelot. But I'd like to change how things are done from within the EU, not throw the baby out with the bathwater by leaving what is a very successful trading alliance just because Merkle mucked up..
  24. Can't seem to find any Utube vids of any length on simon reeves and turkey, but I'd like to watch the TV program, looks pretty interesting. Anyways, I'm hoping Europe keeps the Turks out of Europe.. They're muslims, they don't belong in the fold.
