Here's how I'd approach it. Big rigging, lower each branch and let the guys on the ground process it one branch at a time, whilst lowering touch the tip on the ground so you can pull the butt end towards the chipper. Don't swamp them. Then the trunk, negative rig as much as possible then set up your cushion, fell it. Roll on the horsepower, relax and get the blower out.

It's all about the stem, if you plan to ring it up and handball it out you're crazy. Like someone said, get a farmer with a grain trailer and a telehandler, you'll be finished in a day.

No it wouldn't. People can charge what they like. There's a thread just started with a guy asking price on an oak. Someone is saying 1500 to 2000 quid 2 days work. Now if someone else was doing that job with a bigger chipper and a way of getting the trunk away ie grab lorry or tehehandler and farm trailer they'd do it in a day and charge say 1300, and still make more profit. Would that be undercutting?

I wondered what that post was about! Back in the UK at least 2 of my working days a week would involve these blighters. As either hedging,removal or just topping. Can't say I enjoyed them but certainly kept the wolf from the door. I think also they are underestimated as a great site for nesting birds, they seem to be largely magpie proof.

You'll pull out a lot more than roots, ie fence panels. As for the mattock idea. Good luck!

You'd be using it mostly for dismantles so damage to bark wouldn't matter. Dunno, hasn't got all the BS numbers so might get some peoples panties all bunched up

If it were me I'd price the job as a whole, cost of grinder hire plus say.....200/250 for you. You might finish it by the end of the morning. Just my thoughts not worth anyone jumping down my neck.

It depends on the machine, a non pedestrian grinder ie rayco 1625 or similar can get through a 36 in gate, will rattle those of in a couple of hours max, a HB20 (pedestrian grinder) about the same. Some crappy 13hp job will take all day. Are those concrete footings on that new fence?

Take the rough with the smooth, early finishes and plenty of them with me, no log splitting or suchlike to make up the day (well maybe a bit if it's done by lunchtime) so when the odd nightmare job comes up, it's ok, no real grumbling.
