    Too many farmers and others with top quality splitters/processers/packers who own chestnut woodlands to even contemplate doing firewood. In the same vein high technology sawmills everywhere turning out tonnes of building lumber. I have specialised in what I do. I believe it’s been a good decision.

    Well I just had this mountain of wood piling up, no real plan for it, till some bloke offered to pay me for some of it. simple as that.

    In France they’re very keen on protective sleeves, they might even have legislation to that effect. helps avoid this.

    You can apply for work on a tpo ed tree that’s not yours. It’s no big deal, if you don’t own it you can’t do it.

    Back in 95, when I did my 10 weeker at Merrist Wood we had to wear all round protection trousers. There were two types, Blue and Green. They were like instruments of torture, especially as it was June/July. As soon as I left and started for a firm that didn’t enforce any PPE (including helmets) I eschewed the trousers and wore jeans. It was only around the turn of the century when I subbed for a firm that insisted that I revisited them and found newer, lighter more comfortable sorts.

    15/20 or so years, initially I was burning it, but that became illegal around 2010. They have done 95% of the stuff that the loader (Avant/Multione/compact tractor) was involved in, ie bigger stuff. The really old stuff was loaded onto the truck by hand so piddling little bits. Doesn’t seem worth doing as on each cycle the grab can’t get enough to keep the chipper busy, but not my circus, not my monkeys etc….

    No it’s @oldfeller who should apologise. To me that looks like moss, which is perfectly normal, doesn’t harm the tree and is nothing to worry about.
