  1. That's a lichen of some sort. Possibly some sort of Peltigera but I'm not that good with lichens. This might help: http://www.britishlichens.co.uk/pi_leafy.html Possibly Peltigera membranacea or Peltigera canina?
  2. The leaves will have a strong smell if you rub them. Do you have many other interesting trees about? That's the main disappointment when we moved in here, lovely area and woodland but the previous owner only had one apple tree and one redcurrant as the sole fruit in several acres.
  3. Oops. Sorry, I checked the MOT. The tax is still showing as out of date but it does say "If you’ve just taxed or made a SORN it can take up to 5 days for your status to update. You can check with your bank/building society to confirm your payment was successful." I would guess, or hope, the police will not pull anyone until their tax is out of date for a couple of weeks.
  4. If that's your reg then it is showing as taxed now. Probably an IT problem that required someone to fix something this morning.
  5. If the UK MOT expires before the end of this month it'll be extended for 6 months (for now) and you could check over here? Check the MOT history of a vehicle - GOV.UK WWW.GOV.UK Check the MOT history of a vehicle from 2005 onwards, including if it passed or failed, its mileage and why it failed
  6. A bit of googling shows that as the internation site, the uk site doesn't seem to prohibit them (unless I've missed something): ? What I Can and Cannot Send - Hermes NEW.MYHERMES.CO.UK At Hermes, there are a few items we will carry and not cover, and other items we won't carry at all. Read the full list before...
  7. It's not a prohibited item though.
  8. Doesn't the courier need to show some proof it was poorly packaged? Otherwise isn't it an easy cop out if they damaged, lost etc a properly packaged parcel simply to claim it was poorly packaged?
  9. I had wondered if you could attach those "survival" type wire hand saws to a throwline and if they would cut the rope.
  10. No, I was making a bit of a joke. Escallonia usually has a more fleshy leaf with a toothy edge. The two leaves under the moth in the 2nd pic look just like privet to me and we have a fair bit about the place. Also seen the moths once and the caterpillars a few times about.
  11. It would be good if they did!
  12. Frosts could be a cause, we lost fruit last year due to frosts. I also wonder if the pruning is also a cause. Damsons can take a long time to fruit when young which makes me wonder if a heavy prune will result in a couple of years with no fruit. Any plum or damson experts out there?
  13. I'd quite like an Ox, if they ever become available in the UK. OX • The Only Utility Vehicle Designed for the Developing World OXGVT.COM The world's first flat-pack truck provides opportunity for effective transport to be available to those who need it...
  14. I thought it looked like privet, after all it has a Privet Hawk moth in it.
  15. Yep, Privet Hawk Moth. Privet Hawk-moth BUTTERFLY-CONSERVATION.ORG The UK's largest resident Hawk-moth. Pink and black striped abdomen and hindwings; these are not always visible and...
  16. Gardening tools are only prohibited if they are not properly protected, you said it was protected and they accepted the parcel so I would say they agree it was. Anyway, isn't a 362 a forestry tool so not covered by their restrictions? If it was a private deal and you paid on a credit card you could claim damages from them.
  17. Until someone experienced comes along I would suggest the black mould is growing on the honeydew excretions of the aphids. The brown shoots reminds me of examples of fire blight I've seen online (luckily not seen it on our own plants). Might be something to look into? I'd be cutting off the infected branches back to clean wood now if it was my trees. Burn the prunings and collect up any infecting leaves.
  18. I would agree it's some form of oyster mushroom. I would suggest Veiled Oyster, Pleurotus dryinus, rather than what I would regard as Oyster Mushroom, Pleurotus ostreatus. Here's some info, you could try a spore print. Pleurotus dryinus, Veiled Oyster mushroom WWW.FIRST-NATURE.COM
  19. The first pic is a box tree moth by the looks of it. https://butterfly-conservation.org/moths/box-tree-moth The other two pics look like a cockchafer beetle, assuming it's on your finger. If it's on your knee I've no idea but it's a huge beetle.
  20. I would suggest the bark beetles are attacking dead or dying wood. When I've felled healthy ash and left the logs down for a few months I notice ash bark beetle damage. I've not noticed it on healthy living trees. I've just removed a 25yr old, ash with obvious ash dieback. It looked very similar to your post with a dead crown and fresh growth and missing bark with beetle damage. I'm sure the beetles fly, each year we get covered in them. The car windscreen for example can get covered in the beetles. We live on the edge of some woodland with a large amount of ash.
  21. Any cones on the MP? I gather the seeds are sought after and you might get a worthwhile crop from those.
  22. Looks like a Vapourer moth caterpillar, Orgyia antiqua.
  23. I know, but someone I know with a plantation of walnuts grown for the nuts often looses the crop to frost. I had a quick search to see about growing walnut timber trees and it seems frost and poor form are widely accepted as problems and new cultivars have been developed over the last few years to overcome this. Perhaps people are now planting them.
  24. Is there a variety of walnut that is hardy enough for the UK? I have a few walnuts in my woodland, planted by the previous owner, and most springs they get damaged by frost. This year virtually all the fresh leaves have been killed off. Obviously walnuts do grow but can you guarantee a good crop in the uk compared to say France or further south?
