  1. Yeah I don't wanna take any chances! He seems like a nice guy and is only doing this because of it overhanging the neighbours.
  2. I'm just compiling a quote to remove some lower branches from an oak tree. The branches are not big, but there will be a fair amount of brash. Normally not an issue, but it all has to go through the house; both neighbours either side do not have side access either!!!! I want to put in my quote something like this.... "Whilst removing waste through the house, the utmost care and diligence will be employed. In the unlikely event of any damage to walls and doors etc, we cannot accept any liability" Do you think this is ok? It's not a massive job so it wouldn't be feasible to put a contingency sum on the quote and my insurance excess is more than the job but I don't want to get stung if there is a mark on a wall or something. We can cover the floors and the doors but not sure about the walls. My plan is to cut it into manageable pieces and wrap them in builders bags to carry through. Any advice appreciated or another way of wording it would be great.
  3. Haha you joker!! I like them for positioning and that extra stability they lend, just not good on a pole with them.
  4. I think olives can take a very hard cut; so, remove the dead and keep the new growth. Mulch around it, feed it (bonemeal should be good enough) and water it. They like sun so make sure it gets enough and isn't exposed to harsh winter wind (generally north-easterly I think)
  5. Ah ok, I pictured him lifting the front whilst someone was at the back!! Silly me, I am tired though😂
  6. I was taught just a flat file on the underside only, and as Mick said just the lightest of touches. Think I've had mine about 18months and done it once. Not a major fan of spikes though, I'm not very good in them!!!
  7. Jeez, from what I can tell it seems as if he was trying to position a 'live' stump grinder. I don't even know what else to comment.
  8. Yeah I read this somewhere... Apparently ants are the only other creature(other than humans) to farm other creatures. The aphids secrete a sweet nectar and the ants go wild for it. I sat and watched them on a rose once, very interesting.
  9. Zig zag well worth the money, sensitive but very user friendly.. Basically mechanical hitch climber. I'm using a pulley saver and 11.5 teufelberger rope and it's great.
  10. Yep, bastard service now officially my favourite tree.. Along with a bramble known as Rubus Cockburnianus:lol:
  11. Excavation? If it's not too bad an infestation shouldn't be too bad.. If it's big then roots could be spreading 6m in all directions!! There are specialist firms that deal with it as you won't be able to take it to your local tip site if you do excavate. An 18month herbicide treatment might usually be the way forward but like I said, that close to a water course, you shouldn't really be applying herbicides
  12. Thuja has a lemony scent when broken.. Break it and see!!
  13. I stand corrected. Thanks
  14. Yeah fallopia japonica... Knotweed. Tough one though, not sure how that's gonna be eradicated as the use of herbicides that close to the water ain't gonna happen!
  15. Yeah, sorbus aria, white beam, service tree....
  16. To be fair, I've seen a lot worse... Prob done a lot worse when I started out!!!
  17. Slightly off topic, but I can give you a massive, massive thumbs up for the Stihl 150. It is without a shadow of a doubt an awesome little saw.
  18. Hope you don't my me putting up some clips I put together! It does say to post your videos here! I'm no Spielberg and I'm no mistahbenn etc but someone's gotta do the small stuff right?! Enjoy!
  19. Looks like what the military use... Black marlow?
  20. This is an interesting post. There is a garden company I sub to every now and then but they have this polish guy who goes up fairly big trees with no formal training, no ropes, no harness. He uses a pole saw and a top handle. I keep telling the boss that he shouldn't be operating like this but he doesn't care. It all seems to be about speed and money. (I'm only used if lowering is needed) Is the polish guy allowed to do this, is it a case of personal choice or should the company be held accountable? I mean, if the guy (worst case scenario) fell and died, surely the company would be in a world of hurt?
  21. Ha, brilliant thinking!! It's as if all the scrap metal blokes have put wooden boards on the side of their trucks, nicked a saw and become 'tree surgeons'
  22. How much for a 6" road towable chipper on 24hour hire... Just as an example!
  23. What were you even searching to find this 7 year old post about a 'sexy silver birch' that had been left in the catacombs of Arbtalk? And it's your first post!!!

    Lazy Oak

Could it be a case of the sap taking longer to travel up the bigger tree as opposed to the smaller ones?
  25. Get a long reach hedge trimmer, it can do everything a small arm can but not vice versa. I'd also go for a Stihl km130 kombi unit. Fantastic power and you can utilise the fact that you can bung a chainsaw/strimmer/rotavator attachment on it as well. Don't get much more versatile than that.
