  1. Been knocking my pipe out with a mattock all day clearing overgrown saplings from a garden. Now soaked and tired. So very, very tired! A curry and a film with the wife and kid is on the agenda but I have a feeling I'll be watching my eyelids as opposed to the film!! Matt
  2. The grammar?! Bloody cheek!! GroundsmEn were gardeners, yes; I subbed out to a gardening company. "Apart from the grammar, the statement speaks volumes about your appraisal and appreciation of "risk"" - I like to think so, but then again, I didn't have a rescue climber and regularly climb without one. I know a lot of others that don't climb with someone that holds CS38. Someone said it earlier "money makes us do silly things". On the flip side though, I've got two kids and a mortgage. If I only dealt in jobs that came with a rescuer I'd be on the streets pretty quick.
  3. So I suppose they are just branches that have the opportunity to grow up instead of laterally? Is that in England?
  4. Awesome. What's it like working with a crane. Is it fun cutting off those big chunks I suppose communication is paramount; are you linked to the operator via radio or is it all hand signals?
  5. I'm not sure if this is perhaps the right word for it, but 'fear' works for me. I finished reducing a row of 60ft conifers today for a gardening company. It came to flopping the last top and my butt was flapping a bit. I was getting tired, my brain was on the defensive, the groundsman were gardeners with no real experience of rope work etc. it was getting late and the wind was slightly picking up. I needed to thread this last piece between a shed and a summer house and my heart started going a little bit. I found myself double checking my kit, all my attachment points etc. Once checked, it put my mind at rest and dropped it with no dramas. But I like this post, thanks. It makes you think about the fact that if you look after the small things then they'll look after you.
  6. There's a thread up just now by The village idiot. He's giving it away but needs extraction. Check the thread 'much cheapness'.
  7. Nowt wrong with the Zigzag either (I do have a mk3 though:))
  8. Is it a rope grab for a lanyard?
  9. Depends really, I'm getting nearly all of mine and I'm putting my prices up. Most of its word of mouth though, so they have trust already. Just one thing though, you say if you get all of yours, you're too cheap, so you up your prices and get 70%; surely that's a balance? You aren't earning any less. With 30% more work you'll have more of a presence, more people to spread your good name and that of a company with competitive rates. Not to say I'm correct, but just a thought.
  10. Ha that's funny! Gotta take the rough with the smooth. I remember peppering a lawn with holes when dismantling a tree as it was obviously quicker than lowering it. I was dreading facing the customer but they didn't even bat an eyelid. Even gave us a tip!!
  11. Yep, row of 60ft connys to be reduced by 50%. Subbing for a gardening firm. Started off ok but half way through it the wind really picked up and because a lot of the wind protection of the hedge had gone, the rest was really susceptible to the gales. Was getting pulled all over the place, so pulled pin about 11.30. Got half a days wage, still in one piece. I'm happy. Was clinging on for dear life at some points, groundies were utter twonks; no regrets.
  12. Ah fair enough.. You know what I originally wanted to use was Faithless insomnia but the instrumental part in the copy I had was so short I decided against it. I'll take your point on board next time, cheers
  13. Done a couple of rubbish vids with no great deal of good editing I suppose. I had time on this job to give try some camera angles and tried my best on the edit. Thanks for the advice. I really like my zigzag, very user friendly I find. Sorry mate, I don't know what you mean by an embargo on music:blushing:
  14. Well I'm prob one of the few that like it!! I don't have a problem with it at all. I regularly clean my saws and they don't get full time use so that may be a factor. Although, I do have both the 201 and the husky equivalent. If you look closely through the video you'll see the 540 dangling from my strop. I just didn't get any worth while footage whilst using it! I also have the stihl 150 which comes highly recommended (from me) for pruning.!
  15. Ha! It was a setup, she's always asking me, but I would have never been able to record it. I got my wife to get her to ask me while I was recording!
  16. To finish early!! We both finished our other tasks at the same time and it didn't need 3 guys on the ground fighting over a branch! It's a better craic when you're with someone as well! But yeah, to get it down a bit quicker really! Oh no, he's a much better climber than I am. That branch was a lot bigger than it looks in the vid and he was worried about shock loading the tree and being wobbled. The branch needed to be stopped before hitting the garage.
  17. Thanks for the advice though, I do tend to leave pegs sometimes and need it drilling into me!! I think I do it on the taller stuff whilst my confidence builds!
  18. Was one of mine in Chislehurst. Was part of a larger job, deadwooding, pruning; all small stuff. We weren't wearing spikes til the end so we left some foot holds. Was my doing really.
  19. I use a pulley saver by teufelberger and a petzl pantin for long ones. The pantin does sometimes have an annoying knack of kicking out when you don't want it to. I believe they've made a mod for this though and will get one when its out.
  20. Hi, just thought I'd share a vid. I like it when others post videos, so thought I'd contribute. It's nothing special, certainly not anything massive or complex, but we had fun removing it and i enjoyed piecing the video together. Set it to HD for a better view. Matt [ame] [/ame]
  21. Went back to the office the other day to check my diary and there had been no entry's by the secretary or the other girl. I said to Rita the secretary, "oh, there's not been an entry today?" To which the lad behind me said, "Rita has an entry everyday don't worry about that!" She just smiled!!! I didn't know whether to laugh or get a semi!
  22. That's it!! They were an oval-ish shape which caused the premature wear. I'm sure that's what he said!
  23. Yeah, drivers are worth more. The way my boss sees it is that a driver can get him and a non driver to site, a non driver can't.
  24. We had this problem on a TS400 discutter. Done everything, cleaned carb, changed spark plug etc etc.. Turned out when we stripped it further, the main body gasket had disintegrated! Once that was sorted it worked a treat.
