  1. I was in the water there on friday ! lovely spot , looked like a nice job to do as well !!
  2. It has always seemed a bit ridiculous to me to quantify the strength of all your kit in kn etc and calculate loading and wear on the kit .... but what about the branch or tree to which you are anchored !! ??
  3. It is also cheaper for a developer / builder not to have gas in each house and to supply the development if multiple houses , they will have electricity anyway !
  4. I often see Seagulls dropping mussels , and cockles from a height to break them open , then their mate steals it !!! they are not clever birds just devious ....
  5. Soft wood esp the whiter woods will develop "blue stain " if left lying for long in the summer months and this reduces its market value . Things like western red cedar / douglas fir etc are OK , wood used for fencing , chip board , pallets etc this is less important . So they work all year but species , tactics and markets vary a bit .
  6. Does all this apply to 3 strand rope as used by some for prussik / blake hitch loops ? It is surely not necessary to take it apart to see if it is correctly done . I make my own and prefer it that way and have seen some very poor examples of purchased ones .
  7. It is OK for turning , this bit is spalted and has warped to nice effect ( I think so anyway ! ) as some one else said it is OK for interior joinery/ floorboards and if big ,as they often are will present nice quarter sawn boards . There are some utter monsters down this way and have taken a few down over the years ...but... never managed to sell any other than for firewood though !!
  8. I looked at James doran webbs site and it is very impressive stuff , it would appear it is his stuff at chelsea , do people who pay such money for such things realise it's limited life span outdoors ? same for chainsaw carvings .. esp spalted beech . Heather jansch now has bronze casts of her work and this is very complex and expensive to do but most excellent though ! I now realise CFS is chelsea ...doh...!!!
  9. I made loads over the years and got it down to a fine art ! As soon as they become a bit stiff etc through use I replaced them and most of the other guys at the company I worked for had my old ones . Make a few , its good practice, and when you have found a length you like, make some more , or slightly differing lengths .As much as I liked prussiks a blake hitch I find is far better , and I make my own , what rope are you climbing with ? and where in Devon are you ? ps I always butt spliced them , no knots or tape !!
  10. Check out a website by Heather Jansch , I think she is the originator of the driftwood / bone oak horse sculptures and they are very good indeed and very expensive ! She seems to have made good connections somewhere and these are now in art galleries and private collections around the world , good luck to her , but I think others would just like a share of such luck themselves ( not in a jealous way ! ) It may have been hard work making such connections , but that is how life works .
  11. Go and climb somewhere else ! ...... Is insurance required for rock climbing ?
  12. There is certain to be smaller bits of stem which are too small for milling ( as in first pics ) which would yield nice turning blanks with a bit of chainsaw work , especially in the forks !
  13. Coincidently I was at the coast the other day, and where there is usually just shingle , there appeared to be bed rock exposed ( or so I thought !) on closer inspection it was peat ! with wood encased/ preserved in it , it has been uncovered by the winter storms .
  14. Boat builders like it , I have taken lots of it to yards in the past . It is a very decay resistant timber and is dimensionally stable . Not many people look for it as it is not regularly available in quantities . Keep it in the round until you decide what to do with it , or what any customer wants .
  15. And a candlestick ..... with ivy stalk
  16. Close up of interior of large ash bowl ...textured , scorched , dyed and burnished
  17. Also a driftwood mirror with porthole ( wooden ) but again textured, painted, and waxed , with spliced rope hanger . this is genuine driftwood collected whilst kayaking/ diving around local ( devon ) coast
  18. Some bowls recently finished for an exhibition .. Ash 18" dia ... Elm 10" dia Each has been wire brush textured on the exterior and finished with wax .. Liming wax ( white on the ash ) and verdigris wax (green on the elm )
  19. A fine piece such as that must surely be finished with Liberon finishing oil !!
  20. Not sure what it is ,but from 1 of your pics it looks like it could be a display cabinet/desk thing ! It looks like nice quarter sawn oak on the legs and those curved bits have an ecclesiastical / gothic style to them , ..... and I am unsure what it will be for ! where about's in devon are you ? I am in Newton Abbot .
  21. Until recently I delivered a lot of woodburners and lately ( last year or so ) virtually all had a CO alarm with the woodburner .... probably link selling ... but a good idea though !!
  22. Many years ago I was contracted to dismantle 2 walnut trees specifically for timber , the specification was all main sections of stem in to 6 foot lengths, anything from which to get a 5"x 2" x 18" blank for gun stocks to be kept , but most importantly the stump to be left 18 " high and to be dug out with JCB , this bottom section I was told was the most valuable for gun stocks . The customer had a receipt from approx 100 years ago for the supply and planting of the 2 trees , which we calculated ,allowing for inflation to be the equivilent of 1 weeks pay .End of day we were all quite happy !
  23. Not very familiar with tropical hardwoods but I thought they did not have growth rings . Plenty of nice british wood available on this forum !!
