  1. Urea was applied to help prevent colonisation / infection of conifer butt rot ( heterobasidion and phaeolus ) I think ...... by "feel " I did not mean an emotional one !! Although the one in your Avatar looks a bit sad !!!
  2. Westward rope and wire ( Exeter ) will have all the components , but not in kit form so you will need to order what you need ... very good place for such stuff . splicing , and all rope, wire and webbing fasteners etc etc ...
  3. I had a problem like this many years ago with a husky 3120 , and took it to a moto cross racing mechanic who did it quickly and cheaply and it lasted until me and the saw were parted (sold it )
  4. So in a way the neighbouring tree ( still alive and standing ) due to being "attached " to the stump by the root grafts , feels that it is defending its self ,as though it has been wounded because theoretically pathogens have a route in to the tree .... this I guess is why the stumps were always treated with urea ( from what I gather is no longer done ) ... I just found it interesting and hoped to know a bit more ..... I do now !
  5. Came across this Douglas fir stump recently ( approx 15" dia ) and have never seen so much callus growth on what is effectively a dead tree ..... my thoughts are to do with roots naturally grafted to an adjacent tree only a few feet away ....anyone able to explain this unusual ( to me ) situation ?... many thanks ...
  6. Why do people put greenhouses under trees ???
  7. Really well filmed , and a good job , wonder how much that cost !!! I am pretty sure I did some work for Danny Courtis many, many years ago .... In Frankfurt ...
  8. [quote name= The benefit is safer cars on the road.[/quote] I think it is very rare that an accident is the fault of the vehicle, compared to driver error ...
  9. So if you had a big roadside job , complete with traffic management ( lights etc ) MEWP , Hiab lorry booked , and a team of 6 guys chippers etc would you then stop the job at YOUR expense ????
  10. How many trees / branches have fallen and caused harm / damage since 1930 ?? I know nowadays people are more likely to try and sue but such cases are rare , also if you can prove that you actually manage your woods in a safe condition, have the trees periodically surveyed by a competent person , and deal with potential problems ( eg do not leave dead trees standing for years ) then you can not be proven negligent ... this will also be conditions of your policy , as to tresspassers coming to harm , only if you leave unguarded deep excavations , or tall unstable stacks of wood ( without "keep off " signs ) for example , are you likely to be sued ....
  11. I am amazed that they could make a film nearly 7 minutes long without it raining !!!!
  12. I do not think they have the right just to go ahead and get the job done and send you the bill ... it is up to you to repair it to a standard acceptable and in a reasonable time frame . some years ago whilst working for a large company , we had to drag the brash from a tree job in a back garden up a narrow path next to the house and it left some green scratch marks on the painted wall of the house , ( could of been scrubbed off with soap and water ) nothing was said at the time and a few weeks later they sent a bill for re painting the entire house , it went to court and was rejected !!...... also " the contract " for the repair was between the house owner and his mate , not between your father and the man who done the job , I would send the bill back pointing out that it is totally unreasonable and that they are attempting to profiteer from it !!!
  13. I am soon to underplant an area of mature Douglas Firs , and have a few choices of shade tolerant species .... Western red cedar , Hemlock , Japanese red cedar ( cryptomeria ) and Grand fir .... however there is deer at this site ,and was wondering which would be the best choice with regards to browsing damage ..... my first choice is WRC ....
  14. Neat trick , but wheres the mortar ???
  15. I would suspect presence of metal ......... what do you want it for ?.....must of been a strange sight some one on a beach with a chainsaw !!!!!
  16. Woodworks .....interesting concept of movable shed , and the planning link , however DNP are pretty strict about such things, especially if buildings are for any kind of business use , however as you say it all depends if anyone sees it or complains
  17. Leyllandii , because you can not see out of it once your in it ,so heights will not scare you ....and this will probably be what you will end up climbing most of all !! ha ha .. enjoy !! ! especially in the wet ...
  18. There is a lot to know and understand about " seasoning " of wood , moving wood to an indoor environment from out doors at this time of year is almost certain to cause problems , try to use quarter sawn boards for more stability . If you make chopping boards from one piece warping is more likely , I often cut them in half and turn one half over before joining back together , before finishing , Ash and sycamore are more stable in my experience .https://www.facebook.com/446049848933646/photos/pcb.448003152071649/448002828738348/?type=3 A 2 piece chopping board 18" dia (oak )
  19. Things could be made from this tree ..... however there are many more intereting / difficult logs available that would be far more worth while investing time and money in to .. personally I have never seen or heard of any thing made from Lawsons cypress , it is rather bland and I have always considered it one of the least desirable timbers I have come across .. although it is very light weight when dry so may suit some applications ..... I believe arrows are made from it ...
  20. The Small Woodlands Owners Group (SWOG) as I own a small woodland approx 4 acres .. ( not that I am small and own a woodland !!!) ....
  21. I could not believe how much high viz and hard hats is required to cut veg , in the middle of a field !!! all of it was obviously brand new ..... so clean and bright ...
  22. If any one is reading this thread and thinks that no body annoys them ...........then perhaps YOU are the annoying B%^&*£" rd on site but too dumb to realise it !!!!! ( said in jest ) although i find it annoying when some one fires up the chipper when the first twig hits the ground and is wearing radio ear muffs .... they just can not hear me swearing at them !!!
  23. I have a trend airshield as well , do not like it, but it does the job ....
  24. If you feel there are many companies in your local area then there must be plenty of work around , it is easier said than done to win your market share but it must be possible ....alternatively what about being a trainer / assessor and / or LOLER inspector splicing etc or have a truck and chipper as many others must at times have more work than kit / staff or machinery out of action etc ...good luck with whatever you try...
  25. A pic from the late 80's .... a large Monterey pine fallen and hung up in another on the edge of a cliff above the sea near Dartmouth ...... to some it would appear this would be impossible without a very brightly coloured rope with a dramatic sounding name ... and equally gaudy coloured boots ,some fancy mechanical friction device , in fact my harness did not even have leg loops ..NO helmet ( seems nowadays even the helmet has to be special climbers helmet .. no peak !!! ) Just steel toe cap boots and combat trousers AND I did not have a collection of certificates ( bit like a boy scout and his badges !! ) to allow me to do the job ... Risk assessment ? Method statement ? bat spotters badge etc were non existent .... However it would appear to many that doing such work is just impossible without all of the above !!!!!! ( this is all meant in a slightly tongue in cheek manner ! ) Also I am still doing such work and have very few ( small ) scars !! ( ps ; the ladder in the bottom of pic is the traffic control !! )
