  1. I worked today using a chainsaw whilst wearing combat trousers , it was just so hot it was ridiculous ( I almost exclusively work for domestic / private customers ) If I was told I must wear full PPE I would of went home !!!
  2. Hi , the wood is between Newton abbot and Totnes in Devon .... for more info and to discuss price / delivery etc .. phone Nick on 07973 121152 ...
  3. and he will take ages counting out the COINS giving you the impression he is just a pensioner and expect you to cut it into chunks and load it in to his £30,000 car!!!!!!
  4. Some big chunks of Sequoia available in S. Devon 2 nice clean lengths (2 metres long by just over 1 metre dia ) plus 4-5 other chunks , can load and / or deliver subject to negotiation .... not my wood but can put you in touch with owner ..
  5. The pale sapwood has probably rotted away , which is a shame as the contrast twixt heart and sapwood is one of the beauties of yew .... stupid price .... can some one send the infamous "highly valuable black walnut " video !
  6. The little ridges you are on about are the dormant adventitious buds , the reason why willow and some other species seem to regenerate when lopped , I do not think it will be much use as walking sticks , and there are far better species to use such as hazel ,ash . etc .... the discolouring pointed out will most probably due to oxidisation , this is very common on fresh cut woods especially Alder and Ash ...
  7. It is deliberately done ... minimum alcohol price to stop the population north of the border being greater alcoholics than they already are !!! .....Cider is cheap in Devon and we export "Bucky" to you !!!
  8. Take a tour around a few local industrial estates and find unwanted / broken pallets .....plenty want to get rid ...
  9. This has been going on for years , I occasionally deliver to a place that has all sorts of medical equipment , and there is always a skip full of alloy crutches and zimmer frames etc apparently once issued they can not be re-used , seems a ridiculous waste !
  10. In one area I know you have to live in the area to have the right to buy tickets ( 5 per annum ) to be able to tip there , I tried to help out a friend once with no vehicle but no way would they allow it ...
  11. Buying a piece of land is not easy or cheap nowadays , even worse if you want to use it as a log yard of some sort , neighbours are quick to complain about any noise or traffic , councils seem to think you belong on industrial land which is virtually always expensive plus rates !! ... i have recently bought 4 acres of woodland in Dartmoor National Park and will be able to do my own low key activities but it is so easy to fall foul of planners /councillors / residents etc ... If you do woodland management for a customer you may be able to strike a deal to use a small area , I did approach a farmer I know vaguely about renting some woodland ,as he never does anything with it ( even cut his own wood ) I would of thought he would be happy with some income from it but unless it was several thousand a year he just was not interested ...
  12. In the UK around £50 ,... out of interest what does it cost where you are ? and where are you ? also what would a typical worker earn doing this sort of work? one of the major costs in the UK is land / yard to operate from plus many regulations to comply with, but I am still surprised that the transport costs still enable you to compete with / beat UK firewood on price ( at the moment anyway )..
  13. I have recently purchased some woodland and need a 4x4 to get around and shift stuff , however I did not want to have one to use as my car for all other occasions , so decided to get a cheap 4x4 to leave in the woods and managed to find a Rav4 for £240 , fully functional and roadworthy ( mot etc ) electric mirrors windows sunroof etc however it was PINK ( peach to be precise !) so 1 litre of olive drab paint with a brush and a tin of spray for the wheels "Barbie" is now "Bear grylls " and I have a very useful and fun tool for in the woods !
  14. I have shifted around quite a few loads of sleepers in recent years and virtually all are ring shaken Sweet Chestnut .
  15. Also consider the fact that this industry plays a very useful part in identifying and dealing with hazardous trees, , helping to keep the situation safe !
  16. Of the 55 people a year struck by trees how many of those were felling / working on them ?? ( slightly joking ) .... but it does amaze me really when you consider how much the potential is , especially the number of roadside trees I see that have defects , dead etc etc . but as you say incidents are rare ( thankfully ) but we have become such a ridiculously risk averse society that are scared in to insuring against every thing through fear of being sued !!! and insurers will often only offer insurance if the risk is removed ...
  17. I have heard that in recent years that the Icelandic and Russian fleets have been taking a lot more than usual from the North sea and their own waters during the cyclical migration of mackerel , hence not so many around the South coast , but as I said there were plenty to be had a while back and am sure more will be around before long .
  18. I had plenty a month or so ago , but talking to some local commercial fishermen they are now scarce which is unusual for this time of year ...This in S Devon
  19. If I told most other people of my age group I had purchased a Pantin , would think they are some kind of incontinence pad !!!
  20. Being one of the older climbers ( SAGA eligible for a few years ) although only part time nowadays, I have always used Drt and both ends of the rope with Blakes hitches , however today I used a Pantin for the first time and think it is really useful , I had a big (25 metre )twin stemmed , very resinous !! Monterey pine to dismantle which needed some long hauls a few times , especially after dinner and being able to use my leg instead of arms was a lot less effort ..... I have on many occasions in the past used Ascenders / Jumars for long ascents to good effect but found myself using the Pantin for any upward motion at all , very useful bit of kit , might help me keep on climbing for even longer !!
  21. I made this a while back using bone oak legs and it took some thinking as to how to do it and to be able to do it well . I used a tubular hole saw about 1" dia and drilled in to the top of the legs and then cut off the exterior to leave a dowel integral to the leg , then use a corresponding sized spade bit to drill the female part on the underside of the top ( not going right through ) then cut a slot to insert a wedge that will only expand when reaching the bottom of the recess then glue up ( titebond ) and hammer home ! I am not sure if this is good to be used if the legs are "solo " so to speak without cross bearers etc supporting the legs .... hope this makes sense in text rather than a series of pics !!
  22. This does seem to be an unpleasant situation to be in .... I doubt any reputable tree surgeon would attempt this without NR co-operation , simply due to the risk , however you go about it , it will be a pretty costly job , and this is sadly yet another example of letting Leyllandii grow out of control !!! Leaving them to grow any bigger would not be wise either , are these trees covered by your house insurance ? I do not mean they might help !! but if something did go wrong ( storm damage etc ) are they aware of the potential risk they are covering ,as trees are often a specific extra on home insurance policies .
  23. That is great ! would be a bit scary for some though !! I dive / fish a fair bit and know that these things are to be handled with caution ....[ame] [/ame]
  24. Really love wood for the tops , but are you sure the legs are strong enough ?.. ( joking ! ) Very nice indeed , are they for your own use or do you sell them ?
  25. Not much of a market for ashtrays these days .... was there ever a market for wooden ashtrays ? ... "elf n safety " , trading standards and the EU would probably put the brakes on that fantastic niche !! lol ...You could possibly market the wood as Himalayan flowering tree wood ... some would think that is "amazing "..!!!
