  1. A sawmill in Cornwall ( Crocadon ) is closing down and a lot of machines and wood etc are for sale ... viewing 16th Feb and then an online auction on the 23rd many wadkin machines included if interested then just google it ... just thought this may be of interest to some .......
  2. To win a job like that you will almost certainly have to be the cheapest , therefore using cranes etc etc will probably work out too costly , chances are some one will under price it or even do it for the wood ( Elm is worth a fortune isn't it ? !) then leave the wood in a yard to rot because nobody will pay the asking price ..... All the above are quite typical for my area at times ..........and NO I do not have a yard full of rotting wood !!!! ha ha
  3. Thanks for the link CHIPPY !!!!.... Although I love wooden boats I have a plastic kayak ....
  4. Do not seem to be able to do a link ... but google.... Tree nails for Gislinge 111 .....a viking boat ...
  5. Always best to agree a price before felling and cutting to length ( payment first preferable !!) .... as a rough guide 5-6£ per cubic ft ...
  6. Really nice big yard /land you have there ..... would love to see some finished items from your wood ...tables , furniture etc ... do you make stuff or sell the wood to others that do ? Not sure the Arb police will like your "cherry picker " but I do !!!
  7. Urea was applied to help prevent colonisation / infection of conifer butt rot ( heterobasidion and phaeolus ) I think ...... by "feel " I did not mean an emotional one !! Although the one in your Avatar looks a bit sad !!!
  8. Westward rope and wire ( Exeter ) will have all the components , but not in kit form so you will need to order what you need ... very good place for such stuff . splicing , and all rope, wire and webbing fasteners etc etc ...
  9. I had a problem like this many years ago with a husky 3120 , and took it to a moto cross racing mechanic who did it quickly and cheaply and it lasted until me and the saw were parted (sold it )
  10. So in a way the neighbouring tree ( still alive and standing ) due to being "attached " to the stump by the root grafts , feels that it is defending its self ,as though it has been wounded because theoretically pathogens have a route in to the tree .... this I guess is why the stumps were always treated with urea ( from what I gather is no longer done ) ... I just found it interesting and hoped to know a bit more ..... I do now !
  11. Came across this Douglas fir stump recently ( approx 15" dia ) and have never seen so much callus growth on what is effectively a dead tree ..... my thoughts are to do with roots naturally grafted to an adjacent tree only a few feet away ....anyone able to explain this unusual ( to me ) situation ?... many thanks ...
  12. Why do people put greenhouses under trees ???
  13. Really well filmed , and a good job , wonder how much that cost !!! I am pretty sure I did some work for Danny Courtis many, many years ago .... In Frankfurt ...
  14. [quote name= The benefit is safer cars on the road.[/quote] I think it is very rare that an accident is the fault of the vehicle, compared to driver error ...
  15. So if you had a big roadside job , complete with traffic management ( lights etc ) MEWP , Hiab lorry booked , and a team of 6 guys chippers etc would you then stop the job at YOUR expense ????
  16. How many trees / branches have fallen and caused harm / damage since 1930 ?? I know nowadays people are more likely to try and sue but such cases are rare , also if you can prove that you actually manage your woods in a safe condition, have the trees periodically surveyed by a competent person , and deal with potential problems ( eg do not leave dead trees standing for years ) then you can not be proven negligent ... this will also be conditions of your policy , as to tresspassers coming to harm , only if you leave unguarded deep excavations , or tall unstable stacks of wood ( without "keep off " signs ) for example , are you likely to be sued ....
  17. I am amazed that they could make a film nearly 7 minutes long without it raining !!!!
  18. I do not think they have the right just to go ahead and get the job done and send you the bill ... it is up to you to repair it to a standard acceptable and in a reasonable time frame . some years ago whilst working for a large company , we had to drag the brash from a tree job in a back garden up a narrow path next to the house and it left some green scratch marks on the painted wall of the house , ( could of been scrubbed off with soap and water ) nothing was said at the time and a few weeks later they sent a bill for re painting the entire house , it went to court and was rejected !!...... also " the contract " for the repair was between the house owner and his mate , not between your father and the man who done the job , I would send the bill back pointing out that it is totally unreasonable and that they are attempting to profiteer from it !!!
  19. I am soon to underplant an area of mature Douglas Firs , and have a few choices of shade tolerant species .... Western red cedar , Hemlock , Japanese red cedar ( cryptomeria ) and Grand fir .... however there is deer at this site ,and was wondering which would be the best choice with regards to browsing damage ..... my first choice is WRC ....
  20. Neat trick , but wheres the mortar ???
  21. I would suspect presence of metal ......... what do you want it for ?.....must of been a strange sight some one on a beach with a chainsaw !!!!!
  22. Woodworks .....interesting concept of movable shed , and the planning link , however DNP are pretty strict about such things, especially if buildings are for any kind of business use , however as you say it all depends if anyone sees it or complains
  23. Leyllandii , because you can not see out of it once your in it ,so heights will not scare you ....and this will probably be what you will end up climbing most of all !! ha ha .. enjoy !! ! especially in the wet ...
  24. There is a lot to know and understand about " seasoning " of wood , moving wood to an indoor environment from out doors at this time of year is almost certain to cause problems , try to use quarter sawn boards for more stability . If you make chopping boards from one piece warping is more likely , I often cut them in half and turn one half over before joining back together , before finishing , Ash and sycamore are more stable in my experience .https://www.facebook.com/446049848933646/photos/pcb.448003152071649/448002828738348/?type=3 A 2 piece chopping board 18" dia (oak )
  25. Things could be made from this tree ..... however there are many more intereting / difficult logs available that would be far more worth while investing time and money in to .. personally I have never seen or heard of any thing made from Lawsons cypress , it is rather bland and I have always considered it one of the least desirable timbers I have come across .. although it is very light weight when dry so may suit some applications ..... I believe arrows are made from it ...
