  1. Just bought the Kellfri equivalent with a removable, tipping tub for our Trust. Early days but low impact and versatile. As a garden/arboretum open to the public we can't go mad with big kit. https://www.kellfri.co.uk/tipping-and-forestry-trailer-for-atv
  2. Lovely, shapely trees. Tolerant of a range of conditions.
  3. Double edged billhook. Made for the job: https://www.cromwell.co.uk/BDG5221830M
  4. An observation, may not apply here. I have seen other forums die when blogs are introduced. Although "stream of consciousness" stuff can be annoying in threads it does add life to a forum. Also blogs can be a drag on users because they have more places to look for stuff that might be of interest. Just sayin' ...
  5. No apology needed. My point was that if the signs are to prevent access over a period of time then it makes sense to indicate the duration -- belt and braces. People might assume that the signs had been left in place in error. That said, the duty of care would still have been exercised.
  6. If you display a warning sign(s) where it can't be missed and it is ignored then you have exercised your duty of care. Anyone seeking to make a claim would have to demonstrate that you had been negligent. If it's for a period of time then the signs should state that so you are looking at custom signage. Signs along with stripy plastic tape should be adequate.
  7. Some swamp cypress (Taxodium distichum) for variety and colour.
  8. Why are you digging mud? Ruins the soil. Just wait til it's drier.
  9. Well, how many logs are you trying to fit into two acres?
  10. Is the 501SX a better buy than the CS550?
  11. In a moment of madness one of our trustees planted an "aspen avenue". Butt rot would be a blessing.
  12. Thanks Bob, this is a good option. How do you go about sizing a pack for a 10 tonne splitter?
  13. We're a charitable trust with around 60 acres of arboretum/woodland open to the public. At the moment we've quite a lot of firewood to process -- Douglas fir, beech and sycamore in the main. We can afford to buy a splitter and I have seen 40 tonne, diesel, trailed splitters for around £2K. We do have a Siromer tractor and a 3-point, 10 tonne splitter but the hydraulics on the tractor aren't the best. And for sure the tractor splitter isn't going to handle some of our bigger rounds. So I'm thinking 40 tonne ought to do it with capacity to spare. Is it more than we need? Or is it common sense to buy the biggest we can afford?
  14. They don't do well in a cold, damp climate or on poor drainage.
  15. Related point, I was looking at this today: 40 ton Venom Log Splitter- with Diesel Engine I'm guessing it's an import but on paper it should bust some big Douglas fir rounds I have to deal with. The footplate is tiny though
  16. Especially if the plate drops back in the hole. Would take some finding.
  17. Yes, garlic spray. I "re-purposed" an organic, garlic pesticide. The electric fencing and spray combination was effective in keeping roe off half an acre of hazel/alder.
  18. Some good therapy advice above. Cortisone injections should be a last resort. Plenty of studies to show they do more harm than good long term.
  19. www.blackmoor.co.uk do rootstocks in small quantities.
  20. Not too late and worth a try. And really, what have you got to lose? Fruit trees are pretty tolerant, look at how many windthrown trees keep fruiting. Normally to move a tree of size you would trench around the stem to sever the roots at around 0.5m radius and done well in advance of moving. Doesn't sound like you have that option. Just take plenty of soil. If the trees are of sentimental value you could take some hardwood cuttings at the same time; you're pruning anyway. If the strike they'll be on their own roots but hey, you'll have your trees. That said, common varieties of fruit trees are cheap to buy.
  21. Thanks, one thing I notice is that the linkage lift capacity on the small alpines seems to be better than the similarly powered Kubotas. Is that correct?
