  1. Have been trying this on a couple of small Stihls. Overall I'm impressed. Stays sharp longer than I expected and cutting performance is good. As someone else reported I have experienced one chain that snatches a bit. But that is on an MS230 with a 16" bar.
  2. I guess not because it isn't anything that couldn't get there by normal cooking. Might impart a burnt oil flavour though
  3. Nice idea in principle but the waste is contaminated with chain oil.
  4. Yep, cherry (Prunus). Fruit wood takes an age to dry but lovely firewood when it is dry.
  5. Elm. Super firewood and easy split. We dry the branches in the bottom left aga oven. Makes the best of kindling.
  6. Coming round to this. The beech is fresh so three or four whacks with my Oregon and the crack runs nicely. How do you rate the X27? The Oregon is same length but nearly 1kg heavier.
  7. Yes, 10°. But if I did need a ripping chain (seems like I don't), wouldn't it be easier to start with one at 10°? Good use for an old chain maybe.
  8. Thanks guys. And DT I appreciate the heads up on sharpening.
  9. Need to cut down some big >1m dia. beech discs for blocking. Is ripping chain better for the job?
  10. Anyone know of any UK suppliers? woodsmithexperience.co.uk has them but £11 p&p is a bit steep.
  11. eBay is your friend. "Spares or repair" 200Ts frequently sell for < £200 and problems are usually fuel related. Carbs/fuel pipes are cheap and these saws are easy to work on.
  12. Sure y' could. Double rope is more about co-ordination and a bit of flexibility.
  13. 4mix runs on normal 50:1 2 stroke. The BR600 is a beast. I am a big guy and I have to lean into to stop myself pirouetting
  14. Thanks everyone for the replies. Went for the Stihl. We're a charitable trust and given that the difference in performance isn't huge, the £100 price difference swung it.
  15. Just stand there until someone happens by to pull it for you
  16. Morus for sure. Hard to say which until next year Nice wee trees and can fruit quite will in a sunny spot.
  17. Husqvarna 580BTS or Stihl BR 600 Magnum? Recommendations please.
  18. I don't think that's a Norway maple. Fruit of a Norway is green and the wings are much more horizontal. I would go for Amur maple -- Acer ginnala.
  19. Elm for sure. The asymmetry where the petiole meets the leaf is key.
  20. Interesting. Does mahonia turn well?
  21. Job done. Cable placed. Felling cut. Big hinge. Winched sideways. No drama.
  22. Google Vortex strimmer line. Best stuff I have ever used.
  23. That sounds good. If it won't come away I can spike up and set a high winch strop on the fir. The site suits a sideways pull. Thanks all.
