RB44 project, conversion to suit my work requirements.

I wonder if this is down to the overall gearing with those massive army wheels/tyres. The RB`s I have driven are civvy ones on 17.5 tyres and they pull and go like a train. I have a military one but have not driven it yet but I can check the diff ratio`s and see if they have attempted to correct the gearing after fitting those 20" tyres. Bob -
Stainless cable ok for winches?

I would be worried about using stainless as a winch rope. It is probably only designed for tension as a guy rope with good weathering properties . It may have the required breaking strain you are looking for but how would it fair up being wound on and off the drum a few hundred times . I would have thought it would have fatigued in this application. Bob -
This happened on ours a few years ago, it was driven in at night with no problems but would not start the next day. Covered most of the stuff in the posts here and gave in, a mate came out and plugged in a gadget of trickery and it was the ecm which is buried in the top of the pump.It had another pump fitted and re programmed to talk to the immobiliser which sorted it. Weird how they can be all right one minute and not the next. Bob

One foot, amongst all the crud I have collected over the years I have a shogun pto winch. Its set in a frame and its a factory job. I dont have anything else just the winch so if you can make sense of the rest of it PM me. How many tree have you planted

Its a bit mind numbing but the planting is the easy bit, its the stakes,tubes and in sum cases the mats+pegs that our lads hate . Especially trying to get those micky mouse plastic pegs into bony old ground. Bob -
Dont know , that thing looks lame. If its the same , had all the teeth in the right place and was on a rev A. that stump would have been gone in a minute ish and B you should not be able to see whats going on for grindings flying everywhere. How do you set up an Ipad to take a vid, is there a gadget that holds it on a tripod or do you just prop them up and hope for the best.?? Bob

Its sometimes sits for a few weeks then its out all the time it just depends on what we are doing. I dropped it out on a job for another tree surgeon this afternoon at about 1 oclock and there were about 18 stumps varying from 300mm to 3mts in diameter , the guy operating the machine was back in the yard at 4.30 so I assume he has finished which means he chewed through this lot in about two and a half hours. The last one in the slide show measured 3mts across and was over a meter out of the ground , they could not cut any more off it because of all the metal included. I was thinking of mashing it into a 6 ton 4x4 dumper i have in the yard but I sort of like it as it is, what you cant see is there is a hydraulic push out on its drawbar that goes out about 2mts so once its positioned that is where it stays till the jobs done, its got enough push to shove the mog forward with the brakes on so we use the telehandler on it now with the forks shoved vertically into the ground as an anchor, that works out well. The engine is right up out of the way so not much crap gets up there, the engine slides on a carriage via a hydraulic ram which in turn lets the belt tension off acting like a clutch. the shaft was good , good enough to need the bearing pressing onto the shaft. bob

Dont know I think HP is meaningless figure without the torque figures, its torque you need to compare and that info is always missing from fact sheets. Its these old school long strokes that really do slog hard, engine is four feet tall. Bearings have lost their newness and were not coming off without a fight so I attacked them with the hot spanner. All done ready for tomorrow. Bob

I reckon that set up is bang on the middle of the road and would take some beating. With a rear mounted crane you can probably reach into the odd places the truck wont fit. I also believe the mini loader is a must have to compliment the truck , there is not much point in having the capacity of a bigger truck if you have to handball everything on in smaller pieces. Also not touched on is the return you will get by taking out as much as possible as cord. Cut up and stacked 2.5 - 3 mts lengths of anything including conifer will get you a return which has to be better than stuffing it through a chipper or paying to get shot of it at a green waste station . Have a play with the this Heating Calculator - Heat Loss Calculations A room with a concrete floor on soil requires less of a heating requirement than one with a wooden floor or one with a suspended concrete floor. This came to my attention while working out rad sizes. I can only think that the concrete is drawing up that few degrees of heat that live in the ground. Bob

A trailer like that is going to have a payload of 2-2.5 ton so good for about 6/7 cubic yard of chip max which with a good chipper will be full within the hour . You are then driving around the countryside to empty it while your team are scratching their bodybits. A decent sized truck would probably stay put all day which makes for a far more productive team. If you dont go mad and spend a fortune not long. I reckon these hook loaders are a good thing, a bin or two for chip and a bolstered flat bed that doubles up for moving plant/sticks would tick quite a few boxes in this game , throw in a hiab for a good measure. If you are at the stage where you have identified the need for a bigger truck its going to be a no brainer. A transit/chipper combo is a great tool for a tree surgeon but if your into a lot of tree removals and clearance work a truck will massively boost the profit margin on your work. All the time your running about emptying a small truck your guys on site are not being as productive as they could be or even worse they could be double handling material. Only you will know what size truck to go for but rest assured once you have it you will probably wonder why you did not do it sooner. Bowling trees over is the easy bit clearing them up and getting out of there quickly is where the money is made. Bob

They run 5 massive V belts down one side in the high level casing, the power then transfers down to the wheel on the other side via the polychain , I suppose if they used v belts they would would need to be a larger diameter which would then reduce the scope of the wheel in reduced depth . That polychain belt is just shy of £300 so its just as well it lasts for ages:thumbup1: Bob

Its a bit like that, as long as there is a tooth of sorts on there it will tear up anything. Its direct drive and has a Deutz lorry engine on so it never tires. A typical 2` diameter hardwood stump is gone in about 2 minutes, conifer and the like is seconds. But its massive so no good in a back garden, the lower deck of the truck is 30` long so telehandler and grinder combo must be about 35`. Bob

Nothing fancy about it Stephen its just a brute:thumbup1: It goes behind the mog or telehandler. Its out on monday doing a stump about 8 feet in diameter thats nearly 2` out of the ground and I very much doubt if I will be there an hour.I will try and take a snap of it working. The heating requirements for a modern super insulated home would be minimal. I suppose insulation is the way forward , if there is enough of it just having people in there would almost keep it warm Bob
