Hi the same as the other guys I W Wallace (craft insurance 01202 919359) about £7 a month I never pay to go to a show and at most i have stock for sale I tend to do carvings that are quite stright forward as people like to see it finnished and there are always a load of people wanting to chat I use an old tarp for a ground sheet it is easier to sweep than rake the mess up after .Good Luck with your show Cheers Mark

Hi For holding the log still I use a heavy log with a few slots and shelfs cut into it to allow me to use a ratchet strap to strap the work to the log I call it my carving block but when I get round to it I want to get a motorcycle lift quite alot of other carvers use them as they can be jacked up and down quite far have a look on ebay I think they are about 150quid or so hope this helps I have a workshop/yard in shaftesbury everybodys welcome we also have stained glass and welding/metal craft going on open invite come and visit or check out (firebrand artisians on facebook) Cheers Mark
  6. Hi Bob I am in a small village called okeford fitzpaine as are the oak buts but my workshop is in shaftesbury if you or any of the guys on hear are ever near do pop in and sat hi as for dimensions about 1+1/2 round and 5/6mtrs long cant get pics until next week Cheers Mark

Hi Guys some advise on milling 2 big oak buts should i try to quater it as machinery to turn it will be avaible or just through and through as nice wide oak boards would be preferd and one of the buts has some quite bad ring shake should I just cut what I can out of it avoiding the shake being new to milling not sure and obviously the customer will want as much as they can get out of it probably even some of my blood .Thanks in advance for your advise Cheers Mark

Hi Home of Wood why do you think it would be a waste of time to mill too much rot if still ok I would be up for milling it up and its always good to get out and about meeting other people in the same game especially being quite new to milling P M if you are interested in having a deal Cheers Mark
  10. Hi I will try and put up a pick of what I use its made from a flat wood bit with a curve cut from the outside of the flat to the base of the point if you get what i mean will take a pic when in workshop later meant to be doing paper work not arbtalk

Hi kevkal depending on where you are you could always come and do some carving with me in my yard in north dorset in fact if anybody wants to come and do some carving in the yard that would be cool we also have stained glass and welding going on in our workshop so an open invite come down and get involved lets make cool stuff Cheers Mark

Nice shell I will be interested to see your tower as I have just been asked to do one out of sweet chestnut i milled the top 14ft last tuesday after it was dropped and now I have to lift the but up again and carve a castle tower so we will be able to compare our towers good luck with it Cheers Mark

Just noticed in the pick of the boards you have 3 rounds cut nicley did you mill them in the round if so did you use a ripping chain or cross cut as i have a customer who wants a round milled in half I already asked the guys on hear for advise but seeing the pick thaught i would ask also did you mill them stright off the stump Cheers Mark

Nice job like woodyguy said I thaught my 4ft alaskan looked big but thats one big rig would love to have a go I bet the incline cut did your back in as you got lower i did some sweet chestnut on tuesday that was incline and customer wanted as many boards as poss so now my back is kaput must try and make a low/teck lifter so not down on my knees puting my back out but i digress Nice Job Cheers Mark

  18. Hi yes I agree start with a mushroom just to get the feel of cutting curves etc ,I have a workshop with a big yard in dorset so depending on where you are you could come and spend a day doing some stuff making sawdust P M me if interested Good Luck Cheers Mark

  20. Hi guys a customer has asked me to cut a round of magrncarta in half its about 1mtr across and 6-8 inches thick do you think I could cut in half withmy alaskan he wants 2 pices about 3inch thick still being quite new to milling I am not sure what do you all think Cheers Mark
  21. How about Green Heart they use it for pier pilings its very heavy so heavy it does not float and depending on how much you need I may be able to help Cheers Mark

Hi kenty I have been carving for 5yrs now and have to do other stuff as well some people do make a good living out of it but they are people like simom o rourke who are very very goood have a look at his web site I do tree work and chinsaw milling as well you colud try some local craft shows I tend to get in for nothing by doing demos or giving a % of my takings I have a workshop in shaftesbury dorset if you want to come down one day and do some stuff together cool always looking to get together with other makers of sawdust good luck Cheers Mark

  24. Hi badgerland the hollow but is still upright in the garden I was going to try and get the home owner to let me do a carving /bench out of it I am in north dorset what would have in mind for the hollow stump it stands 10/15ft tall cheers Mark

Hi the botttom 15ft of the tree was hollow so it must have been standing dead or dying so would that have any bearing on how to leave it I was given a standing dead elm and we milled some of that on my mates miser stright away and the boards did not move at all so would this wallnut be similar what do you think Cheers Mark
