Hi As Agg says just use an angle grinder with a 26 grit pad then an orbital for the (industrial look) easy to sand and cut new scaff boards are about £15 each I would use them or does he want the used look if so just ask a local scaff company for old boards I just got a load for free for table tops will post picks when done hope this helps a little Cheers Mark
  3. Thanks guys the pills the doc gave me are just starting to work but sitting around is driving me and my girlfriend nuts (so ko it prob took most of an afternoon to hollow out getting rid of the saw marks takes an age as well Cheers Mark

  7. Just wanted to share some photos of my chests and boxes that I have been getting into making recently. Started with a gift of a lovely bit of elm which I wanted to make something special out of. Took some time hollowing it out tho! The big one is elm and the two smaller ones are in yew, with a tray insert made of spalted beech, and holly.
  8. Hi I have some old iorn builders trestles and use old kitchen worktop its ok over say 4/5 wide doesnt bounce hardly any when I used scaffold i found it a pain to move round you could trestle all round so access all round the work hope this helps Cheers Mark

You might also check out (Just Saws) they import Hudson band mills and they start at about £1700 for an 18inch up to £3500 for a 30inch sizes and prices may vary but you get the drift and very helpfull on the phone will arrange a demo for anyone thinking of buying one oh you can get a trailer for them also about £2000 hope this helps Cheers Mark

Hy guys I was carving out a throne type chair yesterday and did not have my ms180 with me so I borrowed a new ms170 and put sthil synth plus chain oil in it but after it had been running about 5min there was chainoil everywhere I use synth oil in my old ms180 and even on hot days I have never had it driping of the saw had a good look at said ms170 and could not see anything wrong and was wondering if any of you guys had come across anything similar Cheers Mark

Shame its so far from shaftesbury or I would come with my 4ft alaskan but if Openboter knows some woods that we could use we could do something similar down here I think its a totaly good thing to do so anybody down dorset/somerset way want to get together to do similar P M me good luck with your day guys Cheers Mark

Hi Hedge some shows do pay us carvers and all shows allow us to sell our work at shows, as for wood for carving it seems to change from carver to carver we all seem to like diffrent wood and it depends on what you are carving and its final location some carvings go inside and lastly I would think carvings along the woodland tracks would need to be done on a commision I think that I have said already that I would be into attending please keep me posted and good luck loads to deal with putting on a show I would think Cheers Mark

Hi a bit off thread (sorry) but I have noticed the chain stretch that Rob mentioned I have a 4ft hard nosed sthil bar and when milling I am always adjusting the chain and when I got the saw new i was told it only came with a hard nose bar why would they even make a bar that long without a sprocket nose ,must get one from rob soon Cheers Mark

Hi luke I am quite new to milling myself and yes the grinder is a must as agg says esential to keep cutters sharp and same length you will also need a good ladder and some wedges you may also want to take a look at the threds on hear about putting a winch on an alaskan everybody highly recomends them I have one but have not had time to use it yet but have a look and happy milling Cheers Mark

  22. Hi we have a yard near us that only does fence posts and rails and he has a big de-barking machine and they come out nice and smooth you may find one in a yard near you ,good luck as hand de-barking can be a ball-ache Cheers Mark

  25. My girlfriend is an artist and she commented that it would be good if you made the pupil of the eye darker, with just a small pinprick of light in the pupil - small details can make a dramatic difference, especially with eyes. But she really liked the work!
