Hi guys Thanks for your cool comments ,hi Matty I used a water based lacquer that Ti on hear very kindly sent me (thanks TI ) and yes Mr Twig it is becoming my full time occupation but have to do whatever turns up (painting / scrap ) but only had our workshop 18mnths , so any of you guys want anything making give me a shout (good price for arbtalkers) will post some more pics soon Thanks Mark

I've finally found a bit of time to get round to sharing some pic's of what I've been working on lately, including one of my biggest to date - a Walnut Dining Table, which has been a proper labour of love! They're not the greatest of photos, I'll try and get some better ones when the table's in situ. There's also some photos of my latest chainsaw carving project, a chair carved from a big bit of yew that split off the 600 year old tree as seen in the background. I milled some planks from another bit of the limb too, which turned out some lovely timber. I also got round to milling some of the beech which another arbtalk member very kindly delivered to me last year - thanks to him for some really nice spalted beech planks! And lastly, thought you might like to see a joint project with some of my girlfriends stained glass, which she made to fit a spalted beech frame I made a while ago. Cheers for looking!

If you are near Kingstaintion not sure on spelling but near Bovey there is a marble museum there if you have a spare half an hour its not very big but interesting they have the biggest marble I have ever seen 2/3 round worth a look Cheers Mark

Hi Big J how will all that elm get to cornwall would the lorry be going down the 303 at some point and if so do you think there is any chanse I could get 2/3 boards ,there is a very convenient services I could meet at what do you think if that could be done that would be ace . Thanks Mark

Hi Lm yes go up in grades of sanding the bigger the number the finer the sanding paper as for wax ploish I would go for clear briwax or natural bees wax ,good luck with your project Cheers Mark

Hi Lm where are you in the south east my workshop is in shaftesbury dorset you are welcome to come over if you need a space to work in ,I would sand with 60,120 then 240 grit then wax polish ,hope this helps a bit , Cheers Mark

Hi Big J what do you think about the point I made about a board being flat and stable stacked in my workshop and only when I take some off it and make a coffee table will the board move whats going on with that Cheers Mark

Hi again I have a similar board and cut the last 4/5ft off to use as a table top for an old sewing machine treadle base even though I put some cuts on the underside it has moved quite a bit but only after I cut ,sanded etc I had it just in my workshop for a good while before I did anything with it ,I have had it happen a few times nice flat boards and then make something and then it warps ,hope yours does not post some pics Cheers Mark

If you were nearer I would come and mill it with my alaskan but Dorset is a bit far away I am sure somebody near you would come with an alaskan or get one from Rob D once you have a go you will be hooked I was post some pics when you do mill it Cheers Mark -

Happy New Year Big J its such a shame you are so far away with all that elm we dont have any hear in dorset if you do send any down my way please do let me know as only been in my yard for 18 months still getting it set up as I want it so cant afford a pallet of my own but you never know maybee I will get lucky and can get a few boards on with an order from someone not too far away ,Good Luck for the new year Cheers mark

Hi Jo I recon the best chainsaw mills are The Alaskan and Rob D on hear can sort you out with one and ripping chains ,spares for them as well ,talk to him he is very helpfull ,I have a 4ft Alaskan and its ace you may want to have a look at a thread on hear called (winch on an Alaskan ) everybody rates putting one on I have one and its one of my first jobs of the new year getting it sorted hope this helps a bit Happy New Year Cheers Mark
