Happy New Year Big J its such a shame you are so far away with all that elm we dont have any hear in dorset if you do send any down my way please do let me know as only been in my yard for 18 months still getting it set up as I want it so cant afford a pallet of my own but you never know maybee I will get lucky and can get a few boards on with an order from someone not too far away ,Good Luck for the new year Cheers mark

Hi Jo I recon the best chainsaw mills are The Alaskan and Rob D on hear can sort you out with one and ripping chains ,spares for them as well ,talk to him he is very helpfull ,I have a 4ft Alaskan and its ace you may want to have a look at a thread on hear called (winch on an Alaskan ) everybody rates putting one on I have one and its one of my first jobs of the new year getting it sorted hope this helps a bit Happy New Year Cheers Mark

That but in the photo with the saw on it I would mill that just take 2 cuts and see what you get I bet that looks cool when milled ideal table top Cheers Mark

Hi I would cut the rot off and see what the rest mills like take a couple of cuts to see what its like hopefully you should get some nice figuring/spalting in it Cheers Happy Christmas Mark

Hi I am no expert but if the wood is green/fresh cut and you bring it inside it will move and crack but not sure how much ,a lacquer may peel with the moisture from inside the wood ,I have had some success with putting small bits of wood in the microwave to dry it I did this with some coasters so depending on size you could try that Cheers Mark

Hi fen I am in shaftesbury dorset ,there are no end of things youcould make from coffee tables book case bed blanket box ,you are welcome to come down to my workshop with some planks once you have milled them and spend a day making whatever no worries Cheers mark

Thanks Big J will do as you say comes with practice as I am still quite new to chainsaw milling but totaly hooked I want a bandmill now ,just love turning over the first cut to see what its like Cheers Mark

Hi big J how often should I do the depth gauges I was taught once for every 3 times on the cutters should that differ for a ripping chain ,I milled some spalted beech a few days before and mill was doing fine I know its alot softer ,but honestly that oak was the hardest timber I have ever come across harder than greenheart ,thanks for your advise Cheers Mark

Shame you dont live in dorset as I could have helped ,its hard to find a good workspace it took us a year but 4 of us clubed in together all doing diffrent things from chainsaw carving/ milling ,stained glass and welding ,you are welcome to come down and work with me in the yard anytime no worries hope you find a place soon Cheers Mark

No wedges surley that will make the saw work harder and he didnt seem to rev the saw to clear it after the cut either i was told to do both by Rob D so might help if you told your mate only trying to help Cheers Mark

Hi Rob I did a load of sweet c nut about 7/8mnts ago and I did that through and through and according to the customer who I bump into every so often it has stayed nice and flat and he didnt even stack it right I did try to tell him but you know how some people can be ,how did it mill I have done 2 lots the first lot was a demo with the mill for a mate who then got one from you ,that one cut like a knife through butter but the next sweet c nut I did wasnt so easy maybee I got my angles slightly out Cheers Mark
